Honey and the immune system

\r\n \r\n I certainly think so. Although honey does have some nutrients its high sugar content is not good when used excessively and will stress the pancreas as any other sugar would, severely affecting the glycemic index, and fat metabolism and insulin peaks creating hyper and hypoglycemia \r\n

\r\n \r\n Honey can also, (due to the interplay between the Sugars and the Liver), have some of its Sugar converted to Fat, probably dependant on activity levels post-Honey consumption, as to how much would, and how much remainder would be used for energy.\r\n

\nI would have to agree the major brands you get from the supermarket are heat treated and you local supplier is not. The way you can tell this is after a while the shopbrands stay the same (just like a Mc donalds burger won\'t get mold on it but that\'s another story) the local suppliers honey will crystalise after a while and this is from the sugars solidifiying in the honey.

\nManuka honey is the best form of antiseptic around, this stuff is the only thing that kills Golden staff (if you know what that is).

\nSo i wouldn\'t be to worried about honey as long as it\'s not the treated mass produced brand.\r\n

Hi craig2, welcome! I\'ve bought Manuka honey from Australia a couple of times from my local vitamin store, it was so good, I really liked it in my herbal teas! It was very expensive, so I don\'t get it all the time, not sure if they still even carry it.\r\n

\r\n \r\n Local honey has been reported to help with allergies from local plants although I have never tested that claim.

\r\nI would guess that in an either/or situation between Honey and Sugar, Honey would likely be better than Sugar for the reasons already covered.

\nDid you realise that Manuka honey comes from the Manuka Tree it\'s mainly produced in New Zealand. There are only 2 places that it is grown NZ and South East Australia but the NZ one is more pure, so why not try over there instead of Australia. I don\'t want to send business over to those sheep loving mongrells but you might get a better supply.

\r\n \r\n Ya know from everything I read and see, sugar is just plain bad for you. Period. Anything related to, or mixed with, or cooked with sugar just destroys your body in some many ways. Kinda sad too, sugar tastes sooo good. \r\n

In the April 2001 issue of Dr. Wright�s newsletter he has an article about sugars reducing the effectiveness of the immune system by over 40% for two hours. The sugars included in the study are sucrose, fructose, glucose, honey and orange juice.



I did not realize that honey would affect the immune system negatively the same as the other sugars. Should we be restricting our use of honey?
