Pain Control - the Alternatives
I thought it might be a good idea to post our different ideas on what really works for pain from alterntive sources.
Of course the best pain control is always curing the cause but we all know that that is not always in reach all the time.
So if you have an ALTERNATIVE type treatment for a specific pain issue that will control pain associated with it, whether its palliative or curative lets put it here!
Please state what it is, what kind of pain its for, how to use it (typical dosage and application0 and where to get it.

I can't wait to hear the ideas on this one! As an herbalist I know that the stuff that really works for pain are considered 4th degree herbs which only a Master Herbalist or a Certified Naturopath can administer.
I make a tonic with either Poplar buds, white willow, or white oak in a brandy menstruum. It's too involved to explain here. But other than that we rely on anti-inflammatories. Lower the inflammation-lower the pain in most instances. There are many herbs that fall into that catagory.
I'm very anxious to hear what others have to say and their suggestions. Great question Arrowwind09!

Muscle Pain, Strains
I have had two significant back injuries this year... some weird karma I guess. Both caused a lot of pain. I took tramadol for one of them and it sent me to the hospital with visual field disturbances. They though I was having strokes!
This is an ointment rub on that I found so incredibly helpful. Made the difference between sleeping and not sleeping and it is much better than the products you find in a pharmacy. It is made from Cayenne and menthol.
I use it frequently but when pain is bad I do special treatments. I apply the ointment and cover it with a damp washcloth then apply a heat pack on top. Don't make it too hot a pack. Just good and warm. It will help to further open the circulation to get the rub to go in even deeper. The increased circulation that this rub creates floods the tissues with blood and nutrients, can reduce swelling and promote healing.

good prices at this above site. Purchase here or at www.iherb.com
and I would combine it with this ointment called Complete Tissue and Bone: https://www.drchristophers.com/ointments … tment.html
here are the ingredients: virign olive oil, wheat germ oil.
wildcrafted White Oak Bark
Comfrey Root
Wildcrafted Mullen Leaf
Wildcrafted Black Walnut Leaf
Wildcrafted Marshmallow Root
Wildcrafted Gravel Root
Wildcrafted Wormwood herb
Wildcrafted Lobelia Herb
Wildcrafted Scullcap herb
Beeswax
and this page will tell you why but I would purchase at the top link: https://www.drchristophers.com/ointments … tment.html
The Dr Christophers Bone and Tissue I am finding does really help to heal tissues that are swollen, torn or damaged in any kind of way. I sometimes combine this with the Cayenne ointment rub and then place the heat pack on top. One of the main ingredients is comfrey.
Here is link that tells of some of the kind of work Complete Bone and Tissue can do. Please note that if there are significant internal injuries it also comes in a pill form but according to law Dr Christopher had to remove the comfrey that he thought it should have. (cant find it now. will post when I can)

Here's a recipe that I use topically and it really works. It's similar to what you mentioned.
Lobelia extract- 60 drops
Capsicum- 60 drops
Peppermint- 20 drops
Put in in a roll on bottle and have at it. It's great for achy muscles, spasms, headaches, etc.

I am looking for some live comfrey root for planting. Anyone have any they could share or sell to me?
So, Natural man, that is an alcohol based tincture in the above or oil extracts? What?

Try this. Oil, root, leaf, powdered. Organic.

The adrenals produce cortisol. Strengthen the adrenals. They need vitamin C primarily; and they need pantothenic acid (B5).

I use alcohol mostly. Poplar buds contain salicin, the forerunner of aspirin. The barks will taste pretty bad if made into a decoction but much easier to handle in the "brandy".

Also, don't forget the adaptogens.
Among them, licorice kills viruses and bacteria, raises interferon, is a steroidal anti-inflammatory, and helps other herbs to absorb and function better.

Oh dear. Too late to grow your own this year. Need to plant in September; and the plants need to grow before winter. It is a perennial though. Maybe the nurseries have some started already.

Well like I said, I use white willow bark when all else fails. We also use the homeopathic arnica tablets, they seem to work well with the grandkids. My daughter-in-law has used arnica tea for her migraines, but I have read to use caution with arnica taken internally... We also made a massage oil out of the arnica. We have made kava tincture and kava oil which has help with muscles aches. and kava tea has helped me many times..
Normally tho, before we take anything for pain, we try other things, like if the grandson has a headache, its usually because he isnt drinking enough water, so we have him drink a big glass of water, and lie down with a wet cloth on his head... We will try relaxing in a cool dark room, icing the area, taking a warm epsom salt bath, heating pad...and sometimes just getting your mind off the pain will make it tolerable.

Oh, man, when I was younger (and stupider) I had two of those, thinking they were a 'light' drink. I had a hangover for two days. Pain causer!
A topical remedy I used to use is PanAway by Young Living Essential Oils. I used to use it on my dog's legs for arthritis and it worked really well and on myself for aches and pains. They took the Birch oil out though and it hasn't worked quite as well but still pretty well. It contains oils of:
Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens), helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum), clove (Syzygium aromaticum) and peppermint (Mentha piperita).
Another company makes one with Birch oil. I haven't tried it and and I've found Young Living has superior oils to most, but it's called Anastasia and the article about is says:
Quote:
The birch essential oil and the peppermint oil work wonders on pain. While birch goes deeper to the bone, the peppermint works on the muscles. Other oils like cypress and marjoram assist. Helichrysm goes to repair the nerves. Anastasia essential oil helps to heal the pain, not just cover it up like drugs and pain killers do.
Anastasia is Pure Essential Oils of:
Helichrysum,
Gymnocephalum,,
Clove Bud,
Cypress,
Peppermint,
and Marjoram
