HE DANCED in it, he sang in it, but had Gene Kelly made a phone call in the rain, his number could have been up.

Because using mobile phones outdoors in stormy weather could put people at greater risk of being struck by lightning, doctors have warned.

Three experts writing in the British Medical Journal have described how a 15-year-old girl was struck by lightning while using her mobile phone in a large London park.

She was successfully resuscitated, but a year later was wheelchair-bound and found to be suffering complex physical, cognitive and emotional problems.

The girl also had a perforated eardrum on the side she had been holding the mobile phone.

Hell, just wearing a baseball cap in the rain can do it to you - case here a while ago where lightning went for the metal stud at the top of the cap!

Didn't revive that one...

Was it the cell phone, or was it being in the park?

Lightning seeks the shortest distance between earth and sky. So one should avoid being the "tallest" object in an area during a thunderstorm. Being in a park can make one stand out, unless there are lots of trees nearby.

Of course, the cell phone use may have contributed to this, but I think it would be minor.

(Being insulated from the earth should also provide some protection, such has standing with shoes with rubber soles or other non-conductor. That's why vehicles are rarely -- never? -- struck by lightning.)
