Another Perspective:
The Subprime Mess and Phil Gramm: An Experiment in Deregulation For those of you who are not familiar with Phil Gramm, he was McCain's economic advisor (for his campaign), who said that the recession was just "mental" and that the US was just a nation of whiners. after the backlash from these remarks, Phil stepped down from being McCain's campaign economic advisor. (but rumor has it that he is still behind the scenes and might become the next state treasurer is McCain is elected). |

Idiocracy
People sure resist a good 'ol dose of castor oil,
But Phil Gramm was and remains correct. It is just plain 'ol straight talk. Anyone seen that movie on HBO: 'Idiocracy'? The movie has mankind becoming too stupid to even grow plants a thousand years in the future. In my view, we are about there right now.

yes, but

Phil may have been right but he wasn't (politically) correct - to borrow a term. You have to choose your words carefully when your opponents and 90% of the media are looking for any catch-phrase to hang you with. Phil should've known better. It's the small things that make life worth living and that make the difference in elections.

I think for many people the only truth that they are capable of seeing is that which their party is proclaiming.
However with this financial mess I believe there is plenty of blame on both sides. The only good news so far is that these so called bailout plans have been defeated. Apparently our illustriousness congress has been deluged with phone calls and emails telling them what they can do with these bailout plans. If this is what it takes to wake up people and get interested in what is going on then maybe some good can come from all of this. |

btw, Phil was one of the whiners lining up for bailout for his Swiss bank, UBS. |

So our so called leaders in the Senate have passed their version of the bail out bill. Now just what kinds of changes were made to get them to sign on? Well the heart of the bill, and the opposition to it, remained the same, so along list of pork was added to attract votes from various constituencies.
The new bill would extend several tax breaks popular with businesses. It would keep the alternative minimum tax from hitting 20 million middle-income Americans, and provide $8 billion in tax relief for those hit by natural disasters. The raising of the federal deposit insurance limit There will be help for rural schools, disaster aid, extending the deductibility of state and local taxes for people in states without income taxes, and plenty of obscure tax breaks like one for certain wooden arrows used by children , and another benefiting litigants in the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. Extending a tax breaks for homeowners who do not itemize their tax returns. Other provisions include a measure to require large companies' health plans to give equal treatment to mental health or addiction if they cover such illnesses. Tax breaks for Hollywood producers, stockcar racetrack owners, Virgin Islands rum-makers, and research tax credit for companies such as Microsoft. While individual some of these items might have some merit what do they have to do with bailing out Wall Street? To me this just shows the total self serving greed of our lawmakers. This is what some of our senators had to say: Quote:

How many more examples of stuff like is needed before it become crystal clear that continually voting democratic or republican will not solve these problems and doing so truly represents a wasted vote? |

Yes, and still we will be bailing out finance companies and banks that are in foreign countries. why the heck do we have to bail out the whole world? Why can't they pay for their own screw ups and we'll take care of ours?
