My latest Oct issue of Dr Wms health letter says every adult should take at
least 5000iu of Vit D3 and children should take 1000iu per 25 pounds of
body weight on a daily basis. And IF one contracts the flu, higher doses
- double this - are reco'ed for at least a week. I guess this could apply
if one has been around others who have the flu too.
This is what Dr Wms is doing with his own family. He considers Vit D very
important in overall immune health.

OK, thanks so much - I think we'll keep doing the 900 as long as we're in the sun every day but as the days grow colder we'll probably add more.
IF they get the flu, for example, my daughter weighs about 40 lbs., so a good dose would be about 3000 IUs for the days she is sick? And also if we know she's been exposed to someone who has the flu?
I think Tumeric is good but I add it to foods like rice when I fix it,
so I don't get it every day. I do think Vit C, D3, a good mix of the
B vits plus minerals are important. Personally, I add extra magnesium
and potassium, plus Resveratrol and Iodine for myself.
I think you have to go by whatever health issues you have. If you
have none, like your children for example, then you can go by how well
they eat veggies and fruits, etc. And go from there.
As a diabetic, I also take nutrients for neuropathy amd diabetes. I also
eat lots of fresh garlic and onions which I find helps me to ward off colds
and flus, as well as all the other thing they're good for.
But everyone is different and has different needs.
I've been reading up on Iodine and am interested in having it on hand in case we get sick, but I'm having trouble (once again) finding out what amount would be safe to take - especially for my kids, and what % to get.
Any suggestions - brands, %, amount for kids - any dosing information would be appreciated - thanks so much!

My family have been taking vitamin d3 for three months now, I take 5000iu, same as hubby think he needs to take more though, my three year old has 2000iu my 9 year old has 3000iu and my 12 year old has 4000iu. These were based on weight loosley,we are getting blood tests to check and we are quite sure we have had swine flu in our house. My daughter was first she was very ill, I have never seen any of my children like this I gave her ascorbic acid in apple juice every three hours and woke her up for a dose in the night, she improved over three days and recovered fine, my husband was off work for a week but he was not off his feet that much. I seemed to have escaped it with mild symptons, as did my eldest son he was in bed for a day , my 9 year old has it right now. He started yesterday with very high temp and headache sore throat and neck, I sent him to bed to find him on the floor as he was too dizzy to get into bed. He has had vitamin c treatment too lol and has made an amazing recovery today, he is still ill but I was so worried about him I didnt sleep last night just kept checking him.
My conclusion is at last! that my own personal experience is that I think it would have been worse if we hadnt been taking d3 and the vitamin c works wonders in my eyes, the younger ones seem to get it worse too,just my opinion though.

What dose of the vitamin c did you give the kids? I couldn't find a very high dose of it in a children's form, so I was thinking of just emptying a capsule of the 1000mg vit. c into juice - but I'm not sure how much to give. (that is IF they are sick)
What worries me most is my daughter - she always gets a VERY high fever when she is sick - it could easily get up to 105...but I think that is just the way she is...not sure if I should rush her off to the ER just because of the high fever. This is all hypothetical...hopefully we won't have to go through it. The flu is just everywhere in our neck of the woods right now...
MegRG I understand your worry especially when there are children involved ,and the younger ones seem to be much worse. I must admit when my three year old was ill I was thinking do I get a doctor as I had to give her both ibruprofen and paracetamol to get her temp down, she was half asleep constantly and wouldnt lift her head to drink. Hubby bought her straws which she liked luckily the novelty was enough to keep her drinking and taking the vit c.
I can only guess it is swine flu really but I am pretty sure that the doctor would have told me that that is what it was had I called him. I will never know , might have the swine flu to come if this is another virus!
I give my kids 2 grams approx ,half teaspoon of pure ascorbic acid powder in apple juice because it is quite sour , every 2/3 hours and up until I go to bed then I wake them up around 4am and give another dose and a drink.This is just what I do , I think everyone should research for them selves about it as I know everyone is different and some have medical issues.I personaly have no issue with giving them more than this if they dont improve, I also use sodium ascorbate sometimes as it doesnt taste as bad but I do prefer the ascorbic acid powder.Again I want to stress this is just my way obviously a very sick child should see a doctor , I didnt call them because I was happy that she was drinking and I could control her temp , I carry on with vitamin c maybe not as much when better and then back to our normal daily dose.I hope you manage to stay away from it

Even better is amla. This is Indian Gooseberry. It is supposed to be 200 times more powerful than ascorbic acid; so you would not need so much. I've found this in capsules. You can also search eBay for amla; and find it in powder. It is sometimes advertised as an improver of hair; but it is a full support vitamin C.

Amla is a berry. Acerola is a cherry. Since they are natural, they would have other benefits than ascorbic acid. However, since they are rich sources of vitamin C, I would certainly believe you could cause mild diarrhea at some point. 100gm of of amla contains 700gms of vitamin C; so you would only need a little to get all the benefits. Acerola is the second best natural source. I have not seen acerola by itself on a bottle label; but I get amla in a powder by itself. Again search ebay for the straight powder or a major on-line vendor of supplements. OF course you could also just eat the natural food or other foods; such as papaya, watercress, kiwis, and berries.
Amla is also one of the 3 herbs in the Ayurvedic triphala; which is a very gentle bowel cleanser among several other things.
I think it's fairly hard to overdose on Vit C as I've heard that any Vit C
that the body doesn't need, is excreted in the urine. Remember Linus
Pauling who used mega doses of C.

You cannot expect to get the same results with herbal vitamin c as with ascorbic acid.
Now Paulings methods of using vitamin C are difinatley theraputic and designed to force the body into a very specific response. Up to 50,000 daily is required for some conditions and until recently has only been able to be done by IV administration. This dosage when given IV will not cause diarrhea.
Nor will the new form of Vitamin C that has been developed through nanotechnology. Now anyone who thinks they need mega dosages of vitamin c to combat an illness can attain very high levels with oral administration at nominal cost, without the assistance of a doctor and without having to deal with bowel tolerance discomforts.

Hello everyone, this is my first post and I am thrilled to see such intelligent discussions on nutrition, especially on the subject of Vitamin D.
I discuss the importance of Vitamin D on my website, which I think the rules prevent me from mentioning, but would like to add a few comments to this discussion.
First, there is a movement to get info about vitamin D out in the mainstream, at another website: www.grassrootshealth.org which I suggest everyone visit. There is a video there which is most informative and crucial for increasing awareness of the importance of sufficient D blood serum levels.
One of the things I learned from that video is regarding the competition between Vitamin D and Vitamin A which share the same receptors in the body. It turns out that if you take more than 1000mg of Vit. A, the Vitamin D you take will NOT be absorbed and utilized. And this is the problem--most multi's have upwards of 6000 units of A. And, you can get some from other sources like food and other supplements.
So beware, and be well.
