Laughter May Help Manage Blood Sugar
Quote:
In a study involving patients with type 2 diabetes, laughter was found to upregulate genes related to immunity (natural killer cell activity) and suppress postprandial blood glucose levels.
The study intervention was carried out over 2 days. On day 1, subjects watched comic videos and laughed (together with hospital staff). On day 2, subjects attended an educational lecture about diabetes. On both days, blood samples were collected before the intervention, and then 1.5 hours and again 4 hours after the intervention.
Results found that after the period of laughter, 39 genes were upregulated (out of 41,000 that were analyzed), of which 27 remained increased for the full post-intervention observational period. Of these genes, 14 were related to natural killer (NK) cell activity, suggesting an impact on immune response. While no genes known to be directly involved in blood glucose regulation were affected, postprandial blood glucose readings were suppressed.
These results add to the growing body of evidence pointing to the healing effects of laughter.
