MCTs May Promote Weight-Loss
Quote:
Weight-loss diet that includes consumption of medium-chain triacylglycerol oil leads to a greater rate of weight and fat mass loss than does olive oil.
St-Onge MP, Bosarge A.
College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University and New York Obesity Research Center, St Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital, New York, NY, and the Department of Nutrition Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham, Birmingham, AL.
BACKGROUND: Clinical studies have shown that consumption of medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCTs) leads to greater energy expenditure than does consumption of long-chain triacylglycerols. Such studies suggest that MCT consumption may be useful for weight management.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether consumption of MCT oil improves body weight and fat loss compared with olive oil when consumed as part of a weight-loss program. DESIGN: Forty-nine overweight men and women, aged 19-50 y, consumed either 18-24 g/d of MCT oil or olive oil as part of a weight-loss program for 16 wk.
Subjects received weekly group weight-loss counseling. Body weight and waist circumference were measured weekly. Adipose tissue distribution was assessed at baseline and at the endpoint by use of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and computed tomography.
RESULTS: Thirty-one subjects completed the study (body mass index: 29.8 +/- 0.4, in kg/m(2)). MCT oil consumption resulted in lower endpoint body weight than did olive oil (-1.67 +/- 0.67 kg, unadjusted P = 0.013). There was a trend toward greater loss of fat mass (P = 0.071) and trunk fat mass (P = 0.10) with MCT consumption than with olive oil.
Endpoint trunk fat mass, total fat mass, and intraabdominal adipose tissue were all lower with MCT consumption than with olive oil consumption (all unadjusted P values < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS: Consumption of MCT oil as part of a weight-loss plan improves weight loss compared with olive oil and can thus be successfully included in a weight-loss diet. Small changes in the quality of fat intake can therefore be useful to enhance weight loss.

note: I've lost some weight lately. I attribute my weight-loss primarily to a lower-carbohydrate diet (and a little exercise). But, I have also been consuming a fair share of coconut milk (as part of my diet). Maybe that's partially responsible for my recent success.

Does the coconut oil supplements have the same effect as consuming the actual oil?

Judie,
It might. MCT oil is typically derived from coconut oil because (coconut oil) is very rich in MCTs.
From a health standpoint, I suspect that using a good coconut oil would be a better choice than an MCT oil.
The only way to know for sure is to do a "personal trial".

Thanks
Thanks Harry...
I've been using the coconut oil for about 3 weeks, 3 tablespoons or more a day. I have so much energy its incredible, and I have lost a few of the pounds I've gained from the Synthroid being the wrong dose. (although I think they've finally got it right). I've lost 8 lbs. and have 6 to go. If the capsules will work the same I'd rather do them. Geez, remember I only take 30 a day now instead of 45!! LOL!!
I think I'll try them next go round. I'm almost out of the 54 ou. size of the solid coconut oil that I started with. Can you recommend a good brand of the capsules? Thanks.

I don't think supplements are the way to go with coconut oil.
What I did was to look for a bulk buy container of coconut oil. I found that by buying a 10litre flagon for 75 delivered. It worked out around 3.50 for a 500ml pot of virgin organic that the local health foods shops were selling for over 12.
I use it for general cooking. It makes a good mayo and you can add it to coffee as you would cream, even nice with green tea. I fry my breakfast bacon and eggs in it (it splatters a bit but it's fine on low heat. You can buy non organic coconut oil from Asian Grocers that supply the local ethnic community, it's much cheaper and doesn't have the same coconutty taste that may be an advantage for frying onions for a dish you don't want everything to have a hint of coconut flavor.
Has anyone found a UK source of MCT oil. The cheapest I can find is 19 ish including delivery. I'd use it if I could find a cheaper source. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature so although it will make a good mayo I'd like the MCT which is liquid at room temperature to make a vinagrette.

Hi,
I've also been using coconut oil on a regular basis, and it's great!
Coconoil is indeed cheap in the "10 litre flagon", but if you want a smaller amount, I can recommend the Jarrow brand from iHerb, which is just as good as the Coconoil stuff (organic and extra virgin) IMHO, but works out cheaper by the pot.
It comes in two sizes :
454g (16oz) at 4.87 ($7.80) : Product code JRW-16033
908g (32oz) at 8.97 ($14.37) : Product code JRW-16040
Even with shipping costs of 2.50 ($4), I still make savings on the Coconoil product.
For those of you in the UK, as long as you keep the order value below 18 (about $29), you won't incur any customs charges.
Cheers,
Chris
(PS. If you've never ordered from iHerb before, you can save $5 off your first purchase by entering the code VOL776 at the checkout).

Coconut Oil
I use Tropical Traditions XXVCO oil too. I especially like the fact that
when fixing eggs, egg doesn't stick to the spattula, fork, spoon or skillet,
making them much easier to clean. Not true of butter, olive oil, veggie oils
or bacon grease. I don't seem to have any trouble w/detecting any
coconut flavor. Maybe, I just don't actually mind the flavor.
