Kevin.. I was going to post.. I figured out the problem, and wrote the creator of the firefox extension (WiredMarker) that was causing the problem. He just wrote me back, and they fixed the problem and put out a new release of the add on.

but.. it was happening only on vbulletin- that is why I was thinking the problem might be with vbulletin and firefox 3.

but, then I noticed another problem with fckeditor which I had installed into drupal for a couple of sites. with fckeditor, when I would switch between source (html souce) and the displayed text, it would insert a bunch of html at the end of text. but it would have "display:none", so, I turned it on, and I could see this litte image at the end of the text I would put into fckeditor.

so.. I'm thinking.. what the ???

anyway, when I started playing around with it, I saw that it only happened in Firefox, not IE. Then I disabled all my addons, and the problem disappeared. so.. I knew then, it was one of the addons. at that point, it was a matter of enabling addons one at a time and testing to see which one was causing the problem.

so.. here is the fix for anyone else having this problem. I love this addon, and it worked great until firefox 3 came out, and there was a problem with the handshaking between firefox3, this addon, and some editors.

it is this addon in firefox:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6219

but the fix is still in the firefox sandbox. so, here is the fix:

look to the left, under install, and click on latest version:
https://www.wired-marker.org/en/index.html
Latest version : 2.0.08071400

I'm glad to know you figured it out, and the way you dug the problem was very impressive. Early adopters often have to go through such hassles.

I upgraded my firefox yesterday and have regretted. I didn't find any interesting new features, but it's significantly slower. I think I will downgrade it.

Yes, it's slower on my computer. Did you find new interesting features? To me, it should be 2.1 instead of 3.0.
