Probiotics vs. Chronic Fatigue
Quote:
Topic: Probiotics and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Reference: "Effect of supplement with lactic-acid producing bacteria on fatigue and physical activity in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome," Sullivan A, Nord CE, et al, Nutr J, 2009; 8(1): 4. (Address: Birgitta Evengard, Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Clinical Microbiology, Umea University, Umea, Sweden. E-mail: [email protected] ).
Summary: In a study involving 15 patients diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, supplementation with probiotic lactic acid producing bacteria (Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei F19, Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFB 1748, and Bifidobacterium lactis Bb12) for a period of 4 weeks was found to improve neurocognitive functions, while no significant changes in levels of fatigue or physical activity were observed. Overall improvement was reported by 6 of the 15 patients by study end. The authors conclude, "The findings in this study that improvement of health is possible to achieve should encourage further studies with interventions with probiotics in patients with CFS."
