Default Iodine

I just ordered some capsules (seaweeds) that contain 1000 micrograms of Iodine. How many and how often should I take? Is this an acceptable form?

I also ordered some himalayan sea salt, is this stuff really that great or is it a gimmick?

1000 mcg = 1mg

standard maintenance dosage is 2 drops of Lugols

each drop is approx. 6.25mg

Initial dosages are what is called a loading dosage = 8 drops daily for 3 months

Lugols
2 drops =12.5mg
4drops = 24mg
8 drops =50mg
16 drops =100mg
20 drops - 125mg

some cases of severe hypothryoid require up to 20 drops a day per some doctors
and you will find a variety of opinions from doctors that do iodine theapy.

I just had a scare with the synthroid. I've been on the 112 mg. for almost 2 yrs. Thought I was ok. A couple months ago I started having frequent & miserable hot flashes, about 10-15 a day. My heart was racing, I haven't slept a full night in months. I figured it was the premenopausal thing going on even tho with my hysterectomy 13 yrs ago they left my ovaries. I had to go to the doc for an ear infection and had her take the TS3 and 4 blood readings. My TS3 was off the charts and she said that if I hadn't come in, in another month I probably would have had a heart attack. I take the kelp supplement every day and l carnitine, as remember I had aching breasts a year ago from lack of iodine from the cancerous thyroid removal. It just scared me. She dropped my dose to 100 mg now. I'm better, although I did a search that same time and am now taking 5 herbs that Chinese women take that rarely, if ever, have menopause symptoms. So I don't know if the lower dose did it or the herbs. I do feel really tired, tho.
I am going through some major life changes again and can't seem to sleep. I'm traveling now, but I bought some melitonin that I'm going to start on when I get home in a couple weeks. I really haven't slept well in many months. People wonder how I can function. Me too, some days.
I need to do another iodine test with the tincture, too. Hopefully its ok. I haven't had signs of it being low.

So Judie, am I getting this straight? your doc decreased your synthroid because your TS3 was high? and you have been taking iodine in the form of kelp. Do you know how much iodine your kelp supplement delivers?

If this is true you may want to further increase your supplementation of iodine and I would recommend Lugols or nacient iodine. You may be able to fully leave that drug behind. Just be sure to check your thyroid again after increasing your supplementation in about 4 to 6 weeks. You are likely still quite iodine deficient in other parts of your body as well.

You remember that I had thyroid cancer and they removed the whole thyroid, yes? Can I actually do without that hormone and not gain 100 lbs?

Oh! I forgot you have no thyroid. No. You cannot do without synthroid then. And it was not because of iodine supplementation, of course, that they had to decrease your med. You were just over medicated

So did decreasing the synthroid med eliminate the hot flashes or do you think that is a different problem?

I can't answer your question, I've always bought the cheap sea salt. It sounds like it's really good for you compared to the others, as far as taste some dislike it, and some really love it.

Interesting to see that "Morton" now has a sea salt for table use. I never thought I'd see the "when it rains, it pours" Morton girl with the umbrella on anything so natural!

So, saved1986, according to the following article you would have to take 12 and 1/2 tablets of your iodine source a day. This is from Dr Jonathan Wright:

The Miracle of Iodine

This newsletter was edited from Dr. Jonathan Wright’s Nutrition and
Healing - By Jonathan V. Wright, M.D.

Even if you aren’t taking supplemental thyroid, eating a
healthful diet, taking a good multivitamin/mineral supplement,
and all your major “health markers” (cholesterol levels, blood
glucose/insulin levels, etc.) are within normal ranges, you
should still reconsider your iodine intake. Making sure you’re
getting the full amount your body really needs can only help
all your other efforts to stay healthy and cancer-free.
Unfortunately, there’s a good chance you’re not getting
enough of this essential element.

The RDA barely scratches the surface. Dr. Guy Abraham,
former professor of obstetrics, gynecology, and endocrinology
at the UCLA School of Medicine, has conducted iodine
research for years. Since 2002, he’s published a series of
articles arguing that the RDA (Recommended Daily
Allowance) for iodine is much too low. Although the Institute
of Medicine has picked 150 micrograms per day for adults,
and less for children, Dr. Abraham argues—convincingly—
that 12.5 milligrams (that’s 12,500 micrograms) is the optimal
daily amount of iodine, not only for your thyroid but for the rest
of your body, too.

It’s very likely this extra breast cancer risk would
disappear...and possibly some of the need for thyroid
supplements, too...if the women in these studies had been
taking a “Japanese” amount of iodine every day. The
Japanese have traditionally consumed more iodine, mostly
from seaweed, than any other population. The average daily
intake of iodine in Japan, 13.8 milligrams, is very close to Dr
Abraham’s optimal daily amount. Breast cancer incidence is
lower in Japan than anywhere else in the world. In fact,
except for stomach cancer, Japan has one of the lowest
worldwide rates of every other type of cancer known,
including prostate cancer. Japan also has one of the lowest
incidences of iodine deficiency, goiter, and hypothyroidism.
Several thousand years of safely consuming a diet containing
a daily average of 13.8 milligrams of iodine with all its cancer-
reducing and other benefits strongly suggests that Dr.
Abraham’s 12.5 milligrams daily is “optimal” and not an
overdose.

I think that was it. Even tho I went on 4 different herbs the Chinese use to combat menopause, the hot flashes have pretty much stopped and my heart stopped its racing. I feel tired though.
