Default Persistent Sinusitis

I have been having a persistent problem with sinusitis for the last couple of years... my sinuses don't get runny... they actually seem to be more dry then anything... but i wake up with thick green hard snot... usually there by the end of the day too...

i have been to a sinus specialist and he said i have a deviated septum and would need that corrected...

i am hesitant to do that as when my nose is clear i can breath fine... so is surgery really neccessary???!

i have tried using a neti pot on and off but find it a hassle to stick to doing it frequently... the issue comes back quite quick if i leave it for a few days...

i have an allergy to dust mites and suspect that is a big contributor to my problem as the area i live gets very dusty and the climate here is very dry... working in an office building with aircon cant help either...

just looking for any other suggestions and whether people agree that given that i can breath clearly when my nose is clear that surgery is not neccessary... i think doctors are sometimes too quick to start cutting people...

That's how I got started 35 years ago. Mainstream med convinced me to clear my sinuses by deviated septum surgery. I did it. Honestly, it did absolutely nothing for me. My sinuses still congested and, same as you, thick green sinuses every morning. That's one the things that started me on my alternative med health quest.

Get a second opinion. Find someone you trust.

Recently, I'm now 62, I finally gave in and went to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist. I went in order to find out if I'm allergic to something for 6 decades that gives me this condition. We haven't even tested for allergies. She got me a CT scan of my sinuses and discovered that I have chronic sinusitis and most likely from fungus. So I've been nebulizing with Diflucan (fluconozole) for 3 weeks now. I also put a few drops of colloidal silver in the nebulizer, because it kills all fungus and bacteria. Meanwhile, I am astounded at how quickly I am getting far better than anything I've tried before.

I think that if you really want to travel the mainstream medicine world, definitely get a second opinion.

Hi slayer, welcome to the forum. I agree about the use of a neti-pot being a hassle, after my intitial purchase and use, it quickly had a home under the cabinet. Having said that, I still encourage the use of non-iodized sea salt with a pinch of baking soda (aluminum-free) with filtered water as a good nasal/sinus rinse.

Bromelain is a supplement used for inflammation, and has some value in the treatment of sinusitis. Here's just a bit of info that's out there.

i never used the baking soda when i did my neti... and i always boiled the water first which i think is why it became a hassle... so are you saying that normal filtered water should be fine without boiling first?

you're not the first person i have read about where the surgery did nothing... other then the discomfort of the surgery...

i was given a referral for a ct scan but didnt get it done as once again i wonder whether it will tell me anything significant and I don't want to unnecessarily expose myself to the radiation...

i wouldnt be surprised if there was some infection there as green mucus usually indicates bacterial infection and in the sinuses is often fungus related... but given that im not getting fevers etc... then i cant imagine it is real bad... so once again this my reason for trying to find a solution without surgery, radiation, or strong meds...

i have thought about trying grapefruit seed extract in my neti to try and kill any bacterial stuff residing...

aargggh! so annoying! i wish it would clear itself up!

I use a Pur faucet filter, and that's the only water I've ever used for a nasal rinse. I can only recommend that's it a lukewarm or tepid remperature, as opposed to too hot or cold...more of a natural body temp is best.

Default Sinusitis

OK so here is my story which may help others in your quest for comfort from Sinusitis.

I was diagnosed with chronic Sinusitis which I would get everytime I had a cold. I would also develop a strep throat. The only cure was antibiotics although as time went on and the number and severity of the infections increased it was clear the antibiotics were becoming less effective.I went to a specialist who suggested surgery and at that point I turned to the internet firstly to establish that I did want to go ahead with the proceedure and secondly to see what alternatives there were.

After several years of trial and error I have a solution which works for me.

1 To reduce the likelihood of colds increase vitimin D - Cod liver oil I am afraid although in apple juice it doesnt taste to bad. Every day if possible.

Also Apple Cider Vinegar 2 tablespoons once a day in a pint of hot water.

Keep refined carbohydrates to a minimum ie not much white bread

2. If I get a cold which I still do once or twice a year take Ibrufen immediately to minimise swelling of the nasal linings and keep taking for 24 - 48 hours. Increase ACV to every 2 -4 hours to keep you hydrated and to prevent a sore throat and also helps with the nasal passages

3.Wait for the sneezing to die down and the nasal linings to tighten which for me it is day 2 or 3 of the cold and then twice daily use a Net Pot - I use tap water (London) with sea salt.

Using this technique I no longer fear colds and normally I am clear after 4-5 days without the need for any other medication.

When the infection clears itself and the horrible nasal gunk is washed away by the Neti Pot it is a great feeling! ......and without either antibiotics or surgery

I also use a neti pot once every 2 or 3 days to keep the nose clean.

I hope this helps.

Nick
