Just for 5.5 days. I have heard of people getting sick there from the food and water though, the water will be easy. Bottled water, However, I am planning to take some Dr Ohiras probiotics with me and also take them for a couple days before going. Will this help in your opinions and experience?
I would think that most of the food is cooked and should not be a problem. It is too bad that you can't take iodine. Or maybe you can take some; but would not be able to bring it back. It is a controlled substance in the USA as it is used in the production of meth. Activated charcoal might be worth taking. Remember to only take it temporarily for toxins (which include bad bacteria); because it also absorbs vitamins and minerals.
Actually, you should just have a wonderful time in such a beautiful country; especially up the volcano. They are civilized down there. Their pharmacies could help you, should anything happen.
You should be able to take one ounce of iodine but fill the bottle only 25% in case they confiscate it. Cipro is the drug of choice for diarrhea. But I would use the lugol's iodine first. Maybe you can purchase it down there. It might be called potassium iodide.

I know in mexico and costa rica you can get tons of things over the counter. Cipro without prescription as well as many other drugs. Some will even sell you valiums at an inflated price
I believe it was Dr. David William's newsletter where he said years ago that he always travels with cilantro extract and puts a few drops in a glass of water to purify it, and the label says 10 to 15 drops in warm water for indigestion type problems. I've quieted many rumblings after getting what I think was salmonella...it works for me, and I keep it on hand all of the time. My family uses it too. I remember Dr. Williams commenting that he figured out why the Mexican people eat a lot of cilantro in their meals.
Another reason I originally bought it was that I read that it was good at removing aluminum and other heavy metals. I am alergic to aluminum and costume jewelry...which I think has a lot of nickel. I've since learned that if the cilantro extract is used as a detox you should also take chlorella with it to help carry the metals out of the body. This has to do with cilantro being able to get through the blood/brain barrier, and you don't want the metal going into the brain.
For an occasional stomach ache I don't worry about chlorella, although I keep it on hand. But I would be wrong not to advise you to use it, especially if cilantro is taken on a regular basis.
Nightowl, I have heard that cilantro is a great oral chelator. One interesting thing, the first time I tried cilantro, I thought it tasted like soap, now I love the stuff.
I use to be a chemist for a company that made plating chemicals. Much costume jewlery is nickel plated and the nickel will leach out onto the skin and cause problem (even if it it is gold plated, because the gold plate is so thin, the nickel can diffuse right through it.
I don't like food with a lot of cilantro, but the extract tastes kinda like green tea to me. I am a coffee drinker, and I'm sure someone will want to jab me on that one, but I usually just add the extract to a little coffee to make it easier to drink. It still works well for indigestion. As a rule I don't have a sensative stomach, just when I eat something that's been in the fridge more than two days.
That's interesting about the nickel leaching onto the skin. When I got a rash from it, it would take two months to get rid of it. My 14 K rings were fine, but not gold plated jewelry, as you mentioned.
