Spirulina May Benefit Cardiovascular Health
Quote:
In a study involving 36 men and women aged 18-65 years, results indicate that oral supplementation with Spirulina maxima (a filamentous cyanobacterium used as a food supplement because of its high nutrient contents) may lower blood pressure and improve lipid profile.
The participants received supplementation with Spirulina maxima (4.5 g/d) for 6 weeks. At intervention end, significant decreases in fasting plasma concentrations of triacylglycerols (TAG; -66 mg/dL), total cholesterol (TC; -18.2 mg/dL) and LDL cholesterol, and an increase in HDL cholesterol (+6.5 mg/dL) were observed, compared to baseline.
Additionally, significant decreases in systolic blood pressure (-10 mm Hg in men and -11 mm Hg in women) and diastolic blood pressure (-8 mm Hg in men and -6 mm Hg in women) were observed, compared to baseline.
Univariate analysis showed that the changes in HDL cholesterol and total cholesterol concentrations were dependent on TAG concentrations.
Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "The Spirulina maxima showed a hypolipemic effect, especially on the TAG and the LDL-C concentrations but indirectly on TC and HDL-C values. It also reduces systolic and diastolic blood pressure."
