If you do as Dr. Atkins intended, and learn to eat less food than you have in the past, you will never have to actually count calories; just carbs. I do not suscribe to the starvation mode as much as some people do, but I do maintain that proper amounts of proteins are necessary for this plan; especially at the beginning. I agree with Susanna; just do the carb counting and learn when to stop eating and don't start calorie counting. It is antithetical to Induction anyway.
If you follow Induction carefully you will automatically be eating less weight-gaining food from the start. It will be some time before caloric levels have any significance and by then you should be eating such small portions of food that calories will not be a contentious issue at all.
Good Luck!
