Nutrition for Children - Cognitive Performance Enhancers
Quote:
In two parallel, double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled studies involving 396 children in Australia and 384 children in Indonesia, results indicate that long-term intervention with a fortified drink containing multiple micronutrients may improve verbal learning and memory.
In both study groups the children were randomized to 1 of 4 groups for 12 months: 1) received a fortified drink containing a micronutrient mix (iron, zinc, folate, and vitamins A, B6, B12, and C); 2) received a fortified drink containing docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 88 mg/day) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 22 mg/day); 3) received a fortified drink containing micronutrient mix and EPA + DHA; 4) received a fortified drink with no additional supplementation.
Cognitive performance was measured at baseline, 6 month-end, and intervention end. The micronutrient treatment resulted in significant increases in scores on tests representing verbal learning and memory, in both study groups.
Additionally, micronutrient treatment significantly improved plasma micronutrient concentrations, while DHA + EPA treatment increased plasma DHA and total plasma omega-3 fatty acids in both study groups.
Thus, the authors conclude, "In this study, we report that, even in an adequately nourished, school-aged population, improvements in micronutrient status and verbal learning and memory can be achieved by fortification with multiple micronutrients."
Luckily, we do get that message here in mainstream media on an almost daily basis
We are allowed to advertise all the health benefits of fruit, vegetables, meat, grains, herbs, vitamins etc here and which conditions they will help. Sunday newspapers frequently carry articles on such benefits in full page colour along with recipes etc.
Things like saw palmetto for prostate problems, broccoli to help prevent breast cancer, glucosamine for joints, fish oil for children's focus and improved learning etc are totally mainstream.
Morgan33, are the drug companies allowed to advertise on tv in your country? They do in Canada and USA, even though its not supposed to be allowed.
Also, what is the recommended amount of servings of fruits and vegetables there as well?
Its just been bumped up to 5 servings per day from 4.
I would suggest 25 servings per day.(thats including fruit and vegetable supplements)

Children of all ages can eat fruit. They can also have concentrated powder fruit drinks, because almost all of the sugar is removed, leaving only the nutrients behind.
**Neal, you have to be nice on this forum, or you'll get the boot.

Professor Allen said: "There have been sufficient studies clearly showing that when women avoid all animal foods, their babies are born small, they grow very slowly and they are developmentally retarded, possibly permanently."
There's absolutely no question that it's unethical for parents to bring up their children as strict vegans
Professor Lindsay Allen, US Agricultural Research Service
"If you're talking about feeding young children, pregnant women and lactating women, I would go as far as to say it is unethical to withhold these foods [animal source foods] during that period of life."
She was especially critical of parents who imposed a vegan lifestyle on their children, denying them milk, cheese, butter and meat.
"There's absolutely no question that it's unethical for parents to bring up their children as strict vegans," she told the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). https://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/4282257.stm
I think the good professor may be biased.

Sounds to me like he works for the agricultural industry.

If one didn't know any better, it would sound like pregnant women don't get enough nutrients from plant based foods. That is just plain hogwash. Its been proven over and over that all amino acids can be found in many plant based foods. Thats better protein than you can get from any animal.
I'm not suggesting people become vegetarian, but its not right to hear only half a story, and a biased half at that.
Besides, the topic was about giving children fruit.

Yes, I will remind everyone that courtesy is paramount on this forum.
I don't know where Neal got his information but if your not giving your kids fruits or veggies, for gods sake, what are you giving them?
That leaves nuts, beans, flour, rice, meat, fish, milk. Hmmmm.
They need the antioxidant protection, especially in our toxic world. And if a child does not learn to appreciate fruits and veggies at a very early age they will likely never eat them!

Your list is a little short.
But then many many different types of dishes can be made from your list.
I have quit eating fruits and vegetables.
At least what you call fruits and vegetables.
They have too much sugar and not enough flavor.
I have switched to raw fermented fruits and vegetables and I am in the process of switching over to all fermented meats.
It will take a while but it will be worth it.
More enzymes and nutrients and much more energy after a meal.
Children do not need fruits and vegetables and should never be forced to eat them.
Force feeding children something they do not want or like is not going to make them eat it when they get older.
Have you ever seen a group of kids fighting over pieces of fermented garlic?
I didn't think so...
I have and it was very interesting to say the least.
My kid ate veggies quite easily. It was no problem. Much of it is in attitude. They eat veggies to this day. Now giving a kid fermented veggies.... well yuck. No wonder a kid doesn't want 'em.
So what are you saying? What would you feed a 4 year old?

I'd give a kid almost anything without sugar...
That means no fruit juice, no applesauce, no commercial baby food, and certainly no fresh veggies,
