Do be aware that people like Dr Davis who are working in the field of heart disease find in practice that MORE than the 500mg/d suggested is needed. I think Dr Davis regards 1.5g omega 3 the minimum and many of his patients take double that. Remember it's the TOTAL omega 3 that matters. For that you have to ADD the EPA amount to the DHA amount and ensure the TOTAL is more than 1500mg.
Whenever we look at omega 3 we must take into account the amount of background omega 6 in the diet.
Here is one example.
High Omega-6 Diet Lowers Omega-3 Status, but Low Omega-6 Diet Preserves
and here is another
Omega-6 Fat Associated with Insulin Resistance and Metabolic SyndromePeople with metabolic syndrome have higher plasma levels of saturated fats and omega-6 plasma fatty acids.
The relationships between omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids levels in patients with metabolic syndrome were independent of other factors associated with metabolic syndrome andinsulin resistance (waist circumference, HDL-cholesterol, gender, age, triglycerides, saturated fats and blood pressure.)
A
higher ratio of plasma omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids was associated with
insulin resistance only in patients with metabolic syndrome.
Omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids had opposing effects on insulin resistance. EPA was associated with better glucose balance, while omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids were associated with elevated insulin resistance.
