Yes RCannon. Selenium is an important companion nutrient to iodine. So are vitamin C, magnesium, niacin, and vitamin B2. This should be kept a good distance from iodine as a couple of them are antioxidants; where iodine is an oxidant. The nice thing about having the Japanese as "guinea pigs" is that they are all ages, both genders, as well as the infirm. They get their iodine from seaweed, as you say. Also, fish or generally seafood. They typically get 12.5 milligrams per day. USA people do not get anywhere near that much. Our problem is that bromine has been added to bread instead of iodine as it used to be. That makes us very deficient. Bromine is a halogen that tricks the thyroid into believing it is iodine. It takes a large daily dose to displace that. Once that is done (not sure how you can tell), you can go to a daily or even weekly maintenance dose.
