Default VITAMIN D Very serious question!

WHY do they give patients the D-2 form instead of the D-3 one. Are there any advantages?

The case against ergocalciferol (vitamin D2) as a vitamin supplement

Dr Davis The case against vitamin D2

Vitamin D2 is much less effective than vitamin D3 in humans.

The evidence that D2 is as effective as D3 is not convincing as it used specially obtained D2 direct from the makers, They also used very low amounts none of which managed to get anyone above 30ng/ml the minimum level at which calcium uptake is maximised.

Why do they do it?
Vitamin D2 is patented so the makers can charge more money for it hence is far more expensive and more profitable.
But it lasts less time.
Any idiot can see that it speeds up the catabolism of VITAMIN D so by 15 days after taking it the D2 group were lower than than when they started and sigificantly lower by the end of the month
There are some people who cannot use D2 at all.
There are others that find although at first it raises 25(OH)D as the months go on they require ever more D2. I've heard on another forum of a woman whose doctor had raised her D2 RX to 3 X 50,000IU DAILY. 150,000iu D2 daily totally absurd.
Still it all helps the poor impoverished drug companies.
It certainly doesn't help the patients.

Even though Vit D2 has the lesser lasting time, how much is 'far more expensive, profitable?'
This woman pays $4 for her Rx.

I'm not sure how your Copay works or if that is $4 a month or each Rx. in the UK if you have to pay for a prescription you pay a set fee and this is irrespective of the cost of the item.

Prescriptions are usually monthly so each month you would be paying more for vitamin D on prescription than you could buy over the counter.
My source of vitamin d3 works out at $15 a year about 9 if the Rx is monthly then it's still cheaper to buy over the counter.

UK prescriptions cost 7.20. a month or three monthly 28.25 This saves you money if you need four or more items in three months.
A 12 month certificate is 104.00 and saves money if 15 or more items are needed in 12 months.

But if you are a healthy person and just require vitamin d to stay healthy then it's cheaper to buy over the counter (from IHERB not UK suppliers and use WAB666 or similar code to save initial $5 discount)

The amount the drug manufacturers charge for D2 is more compared to the cost of the same strength vitamin d3
