Your thoughts on supplements passing through the liver
I have spent a lot of money on supplements, and used to take a LOT of stuff every day. However, my husband has brought it to my attention that most of these things are effective only when administered directly into the bloodstream (injection) because the oral form gets caught by the liver and is eliminated as waste. In particular, we were talking about hyaluronic acid. What are your thoughts on this?

The body produces hyaluronic acid. Humans and animals. I don't know which organ produces it. The skin? Probably the same as what produces cartilage. It exists in all tissue within the body. By ingesting hyaluronic acid, are you doing the body a favor? It is known that it is a very good moisturizer externally. Retinoic acid, externally, causes the skin to produce it. Perhaps it is better to take vitamin C, which enhances the production of such a substance more naturally. This is a hard one to answer. The body produces sodium bicarbonate, yet is is shown that the body will still use more if you give it to it. However, it is also known that the body will "fight" its alkalinity, by producing more carbonic acid.
Your point is very good. I don't know. That's my answer. What does the liver consider as toxic. Out of my field, and hasn't been part of my health quest. Still, it is an interesting question. You'd have to research each supplement separately. It is all about body chemistry. Some substances will actually force the body to create substances that are healing. Some will cause enzyme actions that are healing, or digesting.
Meanwhile, I think it is just advertising hype regarding any product that pushes hyaluronic acid as a supplement. On the other side, external use could be very beneficial.

Your husband is wrong, sorry to say.
Don't stop taking your supplements.

Your body is still using the vitamins. It does get rid of whatever it does not need hence why you should take vitamins daily. It does not a waste of time and money to take vitamins. Your body needs nutrients to perform well. Just because your body gets rid of the excess vitamins does not mean it is not using them at all. Also, it's better to take food-based vitamins as you are meant to get your vitamins and nutrients from food anyway and you will absorb the vitamins better. I actually don't feel that getting injections would be a good idea. It's good to take it orally to avoid getting too much of a good thing so to speak.

I dunno .. I used to take A LOT of supplements.. but ive learned over time.. most of the time you dont need them!! IF your eating good quality food, and the right ones, you dont need supplements.. most of them are unnatural and I think you can overload/overburden your body unnecesarily.. You can get all the vitamins, minerals, nutrients from food.

Only if it is organic living foods do you possibly get all that you need to protect your body from disease and to fully nourish it.
Crops must be raised on healthy soils that are biodynamically active. The more alive your food it the better. Cooking wastes many nutrients... but of course not all.
Then you also need to have good digestion to take those nutrients to the next level within your body.

Exactly.. but instead of spending your money on supplements, why not spend on it on obtaining higher quality food. Makes more sense imo to spend money on local/organic produce, then to buy reg. food and spend extra money on supplements.
Plus, as you said, you need to actually be able to digest it. Most people dont have optimally working digestive systems to begin with, the last thing you need in that case is to be taking lots of supplements that are hard for your body to assimilate, digest.
Also, did you know that, for whatever reason a lot of supplements, you can end up taking too much of a nutrient, your body can only handle so much of it, yet often that seems not to happen with real food, in other words, you can actaully take more then you need in food form and it wont have a negative effect, but it will if its from supps.
Anyway, im not totally against supplements.. However, I am against taking tons of them, if you choose to take them.. do your research and really know how its going to effect your unique body, and use them with specific goals in mind.. If you take 10 supplements, who knows which one is actually helping and what interactions they are all having with eachother..
