Learn how most chronic diseases could be prevented by lowering omega-6 fats in the diet and why supplementing with fish oil and omega-3 fats is not enough.

Scientist, Bill Lands, PhD, cuts to the chase, and provides compelling reasons Americans need to re-think what constitutes a healthy diet. His engaging presentation was delivered at the National Institute's of Health two-day conference on omega-3 fats on October 14, 2009. Looks like the UK and European Union are trying to increase omega3 in cattle. I wondered when they would get round to it.

President Bush takes omega-3 suppliments. It is important to get enough omega-3 EFAs.

One-Man Tipping Point: How One Scientist is Helping His Community �Nix the Omega-6� and Improve Health

While improving omega 3 intake is extremely important, you need to understand that when the ratio of omega 6 compared to omega 3 gets above 5 to one the omega 6 displaces omega 3 from it's position in cells.
This is crucial as one of the roles in cell tissue is to maintain the permeability of cell membranes and that regulates what goes into and out of that cell.
When cells lose their permeability then they will not operate as efficiently as they should.
The US diet may be providing about 30 times the amount of omega 6 compared to omega 3 so just increasing omega 3 is not going to work in the long run. It will make a difference to plasma levels and it is certainly important initially but without reducing the amount of omega 6 industrial seed oils such as corn, soybean, safflower, sunflower and cottonseed oil and all the commercial foods that contain soy (and similar) oils it's inevitable the omega 3 will not be able to retain it's important place in each cell in your body.

Without wishing to be too depressing the half life of omega 6 is about 2yrs so you have to regard this as a LONG TERM project. Eliminate omega 6 seed oils now, and try to avoid corn/soy fed meat and poultry and seek out pasture raised meat, and in 2 yrs time the conversion of your cells will be 50% done and maybe 5 yrs from now you will be able to get an omega ratio blood test and see how well you've done

Dr Davis does a similar test using ZRT labs.

Perhaps if you had one done now it would give you some incentive to improve the situation.

It is OK to eat corn, soy and sunflower seeds but not their oils. The only oil that should be used is olive oil (omega-9) and flaxseed oil. The israeli Paradox explains how they are using vegetable oils instead of butter and have low cholesterol but high rates of obesity and cardiovascular problems due to a high amount of omega-6 in their diet from the vegetable oils.

While the seasonal use of sunflower seeds may be reasonable I'm not convinced modern soy/corn varieties are as safe and nutritionally rich as traditionally grown soy/corn would have been 100yrs ago.

I wouldn't want to use flaxseed oil for cooking in fact I only use freshly ground linseed/flaxseed meal. I'm not sure I trust the distribution chain sufficiently to prevent oxidation of flaxseed oil. Most UK flaxseed oil is not kept in the fridge in health food stores.
I think traditional oils like coconut and palm oil are safe and healthy as is butter from pasture raised cows or lard from pasture raised pigs allowed to bask in the sunshine.

The whole sorry saga of the cholesterol hypothesis is falling apart and the recent research shows just how flawed and corrupt the whole theory was.
