On the Dr. Oz show recently, they talked about the reason that older people shrink as they age. Oz explained and demonstrated that the discs in our spine dry out and lose their fluid, to the point where the vertebrae almost touch each other and the discs are flattened.
I used to do lots of stretching exercises that also benefited the spine and back. Have to get back into it, I don't mind getting a little bit shorter with time, but I definitely don't want the pain and posture problems that come with a weakened and unhealthy spinal column.

Minerals should prevent this along with exercise and plenty of fluids... decompression of the spine is helpfull also.. I have a decompressor for the neck which gently separates the vertebra... then you release it and they come down again.. this repeated action 5 or 10 times in 15 minutes will actually pump fluids into the spinal discs... they have decompresion machines for lower back also but kinda spendy... well, my neck one was spendy too but I really needed it...
reverse incliners work for some people.... you know, those slant boards that hand you upside down... the thing is not to say there too long. keep going back and forth to pump fluids into the spinal area

One thing you may want to do for your bones is to get some beef bones (or chicken bones or lamb bones) and simmer them slowly for 5-7 hrs with some veggies and a spoonful of lemon juice. Drink the broth daily.
I've read that this "shrinking" primarily related to bone loss. My mother hasn't shrunk much, but she has become much more susceptible to sprains and fractures with her age. Any suggestions for a natural calcium supplement would be appreciated.

I forgot to mention that my mother has been a vegetarian for the last 20 years or so. Though I appreciate this article, I'm not sure she'd be able to stomach this remedy.

The biggest and strongest animals in the world are vegetarian.
Shrinkage in humans is mainly due to lack of vitamins and nutrients, especially D3.
