Default Degenerative disk disease....

My wife (age 58) is suffering from the early stages of this disease. She seems to have the most difficulty in standing for extended periods. She does exercise regularly. Sometimes she has problems sleeping. I would appreciate any suggestions you care to share as to supplements or non traditional treatment. Thanks in advance for any advice you can share....

Vitamin D 5000 IU a day (initially take 10,000 for 2 weeks)

Calcium, preferably in the form of a bone broth (simmer beef or chicken bones slowly for 5-7 hrs with a tomato, a little lemon juice, a carrot, celery stal and parsley sprig. salt and pepper to taste)

At night a magnesium supplement (around 200 mg) do not use the oxide form.

Give this 3 months to see if there is improvement.

What part of her back is this happening in? that may make a difference in therapy recommended. She does need physical therapy for core strenghening and posture. If you don't use it and use it right you will loose it.

I would add to her diet a high quality of protien like Jarrow Whey. Also a glucosaime product at least 2,000mg a day.

Calcium is best derrived from diet rather than supplements but if you must take a supplement look at one that has no more than 3 to 500mg of calcium citrate

4 of these a day will do it... https://www.iherb.com/Thorne-Research...aps/18536?at=0

or one of these a day:

if she eats lots of calcium in one day she can skip the pill but still needs to take a magnesium pill.

She should have a hormonal profile done and adjust accordingly with bio-identical hormones... and probably DHEA also. Find a doctor that works with only bio-identical hormones.

She should add at least 2,000mg of vitamin c a day. This helps in all regenerative processes.

the best vitamin D3 is found at www.vitalady.com Her lable brand is a little less expensive that the Biotec brand but it is exactly the same stuff.

this is a great product but only take 3 per day as it is too much calcium. you will have to supplement with some more magnesium in the malate form to equal at least 3 to 400mg

Arrowwind09; Thank you for your thoughts. Thus far her doctor has not recommended physical therapy. Problem area seems to be lower portion of her back/spine.

With spinal disc degeneration often the pain can be alleviated with spinal disc decompression. There are docs out there, generally chiropractors but some MDS too that have a machine that can decompress the lower back.

I had a compression issue after a fall a while back and the physical therapist I went to had be in a halter that lifted my body weight up slightly as I walked on a tread mill. This really helped a lot.

with disc degenration generally there is comprimised circulation to the disc area. The decompression gently separates the verabraes so that fluids and nutrients or toxins can circulate in and out, hence helping to nourish the discs.

There is also a table system that does the same thing where you lay down on it. For anyone with disc issues I highly recommend it.

I have gone on to purchase an home device to decompress the vertebra of my neck. It has saved me from many long trips to the chiropractor. Physical therapy has lots of tricks for disc issues and exercises to strengthen core muscles to help hold the spine correctly to alleviate decompression. This along with nutrients mentioned should be helpful but it takes a while.

Naturopaths that offer prylotherapy, injections of homeopathic remedies, use a HEEL preparation called discus compostum. This can be taken orally but subcutaneous injection near the needed site is suppose to be more effective for regeneration of discs.. they may sell it at www.iherb.com as they carry many Heel products.
