Butyric acid is found in butter, parmesan cheese, vomit, and as a product of anaerobic fermentation (including in the colon and as body odor). Yes, our own friendly flora produce it.
Wonderful! I will now associate parmesian cheese with vomit, because now I realize it does have a faint vomit like smell.

Does your daughter eat way more junk food than the normal kid? Or does she eat just about as much as her peers who have no problems? If that's the case, then something is wrong and instead of trying to control the symptoms with diet, you should look to see the cause of the problem, Especially if it just came about so quickly. If she is put on a diet and meds and live with it, that's just controlling it. You want to cure it, not control it. If I were you, I would refuse any cholesterol meds! Eeew you do not want that crap entering her body especially since she's only nine years old!

I am wondering if this could have been brought on by stress. Do you know if there might be anything she is really stressing over? Something that has come about in the past year? Stress often causes a rise in BP and it also causes people to eat more. I know that I was at a pretty healthy weight when I was 12. By the time I got into 7th grade, I was tortured by my peers and I gained weight like crazy! If this is the problem with your daughter, don't just try to control her symptoms, but try to reduce her stress. Once that is the case, she can eat what she wants again and she will be fine.

I'm not saying that stress is the cause of her condition, but it is something you can discuss with her and her doctor.

Thumbs up

Hi Debbie - Welcome to the Forum!
Such a shame that you have these worries for a 9 yr old. But good that you realize that the problem is
basically her diet. Does she get sufficient exercise/play time after school?
Running games are good to use up extra calories. Jump rope? Hop scotch?
Perhaps fast walking w/one or more of her parents is possible?

I agree that junk foods/drinks should be gone. Fruit for deserts is good.
Non starchy veggies and salads w/EVOO and vinegar are great. Pastas should be out completely.
Maybe you and she can think up some good combos for salad fixins. Fresh baby spinach as a base
instead of lettuce sometimes is different and tasty.
I disagree w/orange juice - fresh oranges and soon to be back fresh grapefruit are better.
I like adding all kinds of fresh berries to my salads - colorful and tasty!
I wish you both good luck & success.

I'm wondering if your daughters high cholesterol could be from dehydration. Read my post on Dehydration in the General Discussion topic.

Good point! Also, for dehydration, you need water, not coffee, soda etc. Water!

To the concerned mother,

What is your daughter's diet like? What type of foods does she eat? And drink?
Did the doctor ask what her diet is like?

We visited the doc so as to check everything...Her bp is still high and the blood tests results were dissapointing too.Im really concerned about whats going on....I talked with the doc,she suggested to go on a nutritonist for diet changes...Had an appointment with the nutritonist last week....Its the first week of changes in her nutrition...Im trying to control her weight as docs said but she wont accept my help...Fast food and burgers are her favourite...She insists on eating that at school and doesnt want the snack she needs to eat to be healthy...Im also trying to activate her when im at home and have some excercises or running or just go for a walk but nothing motivates her.As for the stress she is not stressed,in general she is happy and have friends...Its her eating habits that plays the main role of her problem....I hope she understands that soon and i am trying to do my best....Thank you all for your help

Fast food and burgers are her favorite. And she has high cholesterol, high enough where the doctor thinks she could be put on cholesterol medicine for it. And she is 9 years old.

One thing to keep in mind about cholesterol that I learned from Russel Blaylock's M.D. book (Health and Nutrition Secrets)....cholesterol only becomes a problem in the arteries if it oxidizes. And you know what causes oxidation? Trans fats. You know what helps to prevent oxidation? Antioxidants.

fast food has plenty of trans fats. fruits and vegetables have plenty of antioxidants.

The simplest thing you can start, is to cut out the fast food, and increase the fruits and vegetables she eats. Even if its as simple as making her eat a piece of fruit with each meal.
Most of fast food it is not really even food anyway. GM corn and trans fatty oils aren't really foods.

Although this would really suck for a nine yr old, have her start eating brown rice (natural blood pressure lowerer) and start getting organic apples and cut one up (with the peel, this is very important) and place in a blender with 1/2 cup of water and blend for a minute (you might want to add a couple drops of lemon juice before blending). Have her drink this for breakfast. (The pectin in the apple peel binds with bile acids in the gut and prevents the from being absorbed, thus decreasing the livers ability to make cholesterol)

This is an old thread, but this is so wrong.

You have the attitude that you can't stop your 9 year old from eating or doing whatever she wants. If any 9 year old is allowed to do whatever they want they will eat garbage food that is engineered to taste good, but nutritionally devoid and thus develop similar problems to your daughter.

Just have her eat traditional french/mediterannean food. Stay away from anything americanized. If you can find it, there was a movie/documentary called supersize me, where a guy ate McDonalds for a month and nothing else. His blood chemistry was shot to hell in just 2 weeks.

If you get the chance watch FATHEAD the movie Where Tom Naughton examines the claims made in the SupersizeMe movie.
It's not that I support a junk food diet but we do have to understand what is the problem with fast food. It's not the burgers BUT the buns, the sweetened beverages and the omega 6 content of meat and oils used.
