For me this is just another bit of information to prove to what I have said before. �As I see it we have a one party system that just changes its name every few years.�

Maybe if enough people wake up to what is going on then perhaps we could see some real change. Unfortunately it seems many of our illustrious leaders are working as stealthily as possible to make real change next to imposable.

One Nation Under Surveillance

People promise the moon and the stars to get into office. It is like a guy courting a gal....lies ...lies...lies. Troops are still in the Middle East.. I do not think that they are coming home soon. The Cuban Embargo is still in effect. Now an extinction..oops...extension of wiretapping? You guys are under siege from the inside and the outside.

Well President Obama is in Trinidad and Tobago, the host country of the Fifth Summit of the Americas, this weekend. He has not said outright that he is putting an end to the Cuban Embargo but he seems to be extending a friendly hand to that country. He admitted that the U.S. had made mistakes in the past which he would not want to repeat and he dismissed the idea of senior(U.S) and junior(other West.Hemisp) nations in any partnership. He spoke of equality and mutual respect.

I believe that time will tell.

Time does tell all.

The media here is putting the heat on the administration and the president to come clean about wiretapping and torture....especially the torture thing. Lots of heat. No punishment for these guys is outrageous! Bush and Cheney should hang as well as the Federal judges that helped them to pull it off. A system needs to be devised to prevent the president, any president from taking so much power and ill using it through secret court rulings, memos.

Many people think we have signed on to the Genevia (sp?) convention, but we have not fully and that is why the Hague is not coming after these guys. Spain is trying but they will not have success. The way it works is that we must bring them to trial first. Then the Hague can have at them...which I think they should.

I feel ashamed for our country that Obama has not spoken the words that those who torture must go to trial and punished if guilty. Just saying we will not torture anymore is not enough. Many many Americans are so outraged at what has happened, always believing that as a nation we would not do this. Bush and Cheney have deceived us and corrupted our reputation, and defiled our nation in ways that require atonement on all levels.

You have a Lower House and a Senate, both of which are loaded with politicians. You also have a written constitution, unlike England, that has been amended several times to effect change.

The President alone did not frame the constitution. Politicians, pressure groups, activists, etc. all contributed. Time to get into action again.

Well the Summit has concluded and only Prime Minister Patrick Manning of T & T has signed the Declaration of Port of Spain. He says that the other leaders "authorised" him to sign on their behalf. Why did they come in the first place?

Fancy phrases were used like new beginnings, mutual respect, high spirit of cooperation, consensus but not unanimity, new approach to engagement, partnership of equals, etc.

There was a stand off with Police in riot gear and a group of environmentalists/social activists at an event called Drummit to the Summit in St. James, about two miles North West of Port of Spain. Lots of drummers were there drumming away. It started to get ugly at one point when a senior female Police Officer ordered that the microphones be shut off. Things calmed down when a more senior female Police Officer ordered the police to quit the scene. The organisers had a signed contract which gave them permission to use the St. James Amphitheatre.

Manning says that long term benefits are expected, eg. investment opportunities and the development of the people of T & T and the Caribbean. The answer will or will not come as time goes along.

The majority of leaders at the Fifth Summit of the Americas were calling for an end to the Cuban Embargo and the lifting of the suspension to allow Cuba to re-enter the Organisation of American States. I did not hear any conditions attached. But Raoul Castro is quoted as saying that Cuba is not interested in returning. Yesterday Ortega, now Cuban spokesman, said almost the same thing.

President Obama has made the first moves by lifting the restriction of travel to Cuba and allowing Cuban/Americans to take money to Cuba. I understand that the Castros are taxing that money to the tune of 20% on the dollar. I do not think that Pres. Obama should make any further overtures until Cuba reciprocates. They can start by holding free and fair elections.

This is the the last thing they would do.
