Default Indian Herb Lowers Blood Sugar

Quote:
A one gram daily dose of C. indica extract led to an 18 per cent reduction in blood sugar levels after meals, according to a double blind, placebo control, randomised study published in the journal Diabetes Care.

The study adds to an ever-growing body of evidence behind the herb's benefits for diabetics, highlighted a few years back in a review by researchers from the Harvard Medical School. They stated that Coccinia indica had the most evidence supporting their potential benefits, with results available from adequately designed randomised controlled trials (RCTs).

The authors, led by Rebecca Kuriyan from Institute of Population Health and Clinical Research, Bangalore, recruited 60 people with mild type-2 diabetics (age range 35-60) and randomly assigned them to receive either the one gram C. indica extract or placebo for 90 days. The extract was obtained using alcohol.

Default Dr. Julian Whitaker's comment on ivy gourd

"Coccinia indica (also known as ivy gourd) is an herb that grows abundantly in India where its widely used to treat diabetes. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, 60 newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic subjects (not taking any medications for glucose control) received either 1,000 mg of ivy gourd extract, or a placebo. Those taking ivy gourd extract experienced better blood sugar control, with a 15.6 percent decrease in fasting blood glucose."

So, despite a lot of researching on supplements that help control diabetes, why have I never heard of this before?

I agree, what is this all about? And more importantly if it's a person that is suffering from diabetes hasn't heard about a miracle, well it's been kept well hidden.

Treatment of diabetes mellitus with Coccinia indica.
If you read the article you will probably guess why this hasn't become a well used strategy.
The effect of this treatment builds up over time so if you use it daily it will take about 3 weeks before it's action will become apparent.

The idea that it will be 3 weeks before you begin to see results and 6 weeks before those results will really measurable and significant is too much for most people. I don't think most people have to patience or will be compliant with a substance that takes several weeks to begin to take effect.

I think it's much the same with vitamin D, omega 3 and magnesium, they are slow acting and therefore the results of having a lower inflammatory status won't generally produce an instant reaction.
I may know how it improves immune function and be able to explain why I don't catch colds anymore or don't feel as much pain but for someone currently in pain they want that pain reduced now, the fact that changing pain thresholds over 3~12 months can be done is not so dramatic but because it's cheap and produces no side effects in the long run it's the best option.

Thank you for your response "O enlightened one"! I can see with the article that it takes too long to work and a compliant issue. I guess sometimes I just wish for that miracle.

I think we have to try to understand that our body is the product of hundreds of thousands of years of evolution and if we want to keep it functioning as it evolved to function we have to limit the challenges to those foods that were available over that period of evolution.
Modern grains are very different from the grains available when I was a boy. In a similar fashion the oils we now use weren't available to previous generations. The factors that cause inflammation have increased while human anti inflammation resources have declined. (lower vitamin d, lower omega 3 lower magnesium, less melatonin)
Restoring all these anti inflammatory deficiency states while reducing the pro inflammatory inputs takes time, a lot longer than most people realise.
You can turn your health around but there isn't a magic pill to do that and allow you to continue to abuse your body and ignore the evidence of the whole of human evolution.

Yes, many people would rather take drugs rather than do something good for their body...

but on the other hand there is no word on WHY this plant medicine works.. and that should be taken into consideration also. Just what is it doing in the body?

Also, I would note that there are a number of plant remedies out there that are beneficial for diabetics.

Why do people not know about them? Because they don't spend time reading alterntive medical literature and websites. I assure you. Some people do know about them and use them. You will not be hearing this on the TV adds on CNN news. Pharmaceutical industries don't not want you to stop sending your money into them for drugs and diabetic supplies. It is a multi billion dollar industry and they intend to keep it that way

they intend to keep it that way right up to working to take your RIGHT to purchase and use herbs and vitamins away.

That being said, it is important for diabetics to know that some people who have used MMS have thrown their diabetic supplies out the window. You will only hear this kind of information here on forums like this.
