Default falling asleep after main meal

this is annoying, after my evening meal I like to settle down and watch my favourite tv show, with my knitting, but I get so tired, drowsy and yawn a lot and before I know it, Im waking up having missed my tv show
usually the part where they tell you 'who dunnit'
it doesnt happen all the time but often enough to be annoying
can anything be done about this?

You need to watch a more interesting and stimulating TV show.

OK OK could be 2 reasons or a combination. 1) Blood sugar levels dropping, but more likely 2) your body is moving blood top you digestive system and that makes you a little tired.

Are you sleeping at night? Could be, no science to it, you're just tired.

Another possibility is an underactive thyroid. But you will definitely have other symptoms i.e. you feel the cold, lethargy, hoarseness, weight gain etc. No two people are the same with that one. But it is very common.
(Hazel Courteney says women feeling tired all the time is the number one issue she receives letters about)

The higher the carbohydrate content of a meal, the more sleepy one gets. This is normal. Skip the dessert.

Quote:
Carbohydrates increase serotonin, which produces a depressing or sleepy feeling. This is the reason nice hotels place candy on your pillow in the evening; it l iterally helps you sleep. (Protein, on the other hand, is a brain stimulant, picking you up mentally. Here's another example of how trends distort the real picture: many people have been taught that sugar is stimulating. This is a significant consideration for those trying to learn, whether at school, home or work.)

thank you everyone for your responses, you have given me much to think about.
jfh , very interesting link on carbohydrates ,it could well be my problem
I thought I was following a low carb diet , years ago tests showed I wasn't metabolizing carbohydrates properly, since then my diet has been low in breads/pasta etc etc, and high in vegetables and fruit, didnt know they are carbs too.
Im going to look at that link further its complex and even contrary to me given that my triglycerides are virtually non existant

another thing I'm going to try soon is 'swedish bitters' , I will post if its as good as it claims to be

Just noticed this Audi,I find that if I have an evening meal with garlick in it, or eat chocolate, in the evenings that will make me sleepy.

This happens to me and pretty much everyone I know after eating a big meal. I mean eating till your stuffed. I just saw this topic on the doctors too recently. They said your body uses its energy to digest its food and it makes you tired. I used to always eat before bed and would wake up groggy and tired and never knew why than found out, same thing, my body is at work using energy to digest the food while I am sleeping so I am waking up tired. To much of the wrong carbs will cause insulin levels in your blood to surge which can cause this too.

Eat healthy complex carbs & lots of veggies and stop when your body is full and you should be fine.
