Unhappy ear pain mystery

I'm trying out posting on health forums to see if anyone has any inkling as to what this pain is that I have been having for years- or if anyone has the same symptoms as me!

This has been going on for five years now- used to be both ears, now it's just the left. It comes on about mid-to-late night while sleeping and always after I have been sleeping on my left side. I flip over on to my right side and that usually takes care of it. The pain can range anywhere from dull and achy to splitting. I used to feel that the source was inner ear, but the more it goes on I am convinced it is actually outer. The ear gets very warm and red when this happens.

The only doctors I have consulted about it were the absolute worst doctors I have ever been seen by and they didn't know anything. One doctor claimed it was from the cold I had even though the ear pain had started way before I had the cold. Another told me I would "just have to take aspirin all day everyday" to avoid it. Psh! Ya right. Since then I'm tried those garlic ear drops... that doesn't help which is one reason it leads me to believe it has nothing to do with the inner ear.

...anyone have any clues?

How is your balance? Inner ear problems effect a person's balance...That might give you a clue.

Is it an issue with compounded excess ear wax? 'Rodding' an ear in an attempt to clear it can actually compound the wax deeper down against the ear drum (Can also perforate the ear drum if you're not careful)

Is there are possibilty that you have a trapped nerve somewhere in that region?

I was wondering if one of these pillows would help you?

I have not had any balance issues, so that is one reason I tend to not think of it as an inner problem anymore. I stopped using q-tips on my ears (if that is what you are referring to) after this pain started 5 years ago. I used those ear wax candles to no avail, and every time a doctor checked my ears they told me everything looked normal and there was no build-up of wax at all.

The pillow could be a thing... it's very confusing because I feel like the problem has evolved over the years to only happening on my left ear and when I'm sleeping on my left side. But it wasn't always like that!

This whole thing has been so mysterious all these years I feel like I should be on an episode of "House". I was hoping I could find someone who has had a similar issue.

Also, I did swim competitively for six years, quitting two years before this started. Sometimes I wonder if all that time in the water had something to do with it?
