No. Not exactly correct. Kind of, but not exactly. It trains your immune system to defend itself. It does nothing directly for the symptoms or the cause. The same as vaccines. Your immune system detects a "pattern" of an alien microbe or chemical, and sends out various mechanisms to protect itself. The body is quite strong in this aspect. It is like when you catch a cold, which is a virus. After you defeat that cold, you should never ever catch the same virus again.
When you have so many colds as a child, doesn't it seem that you don't have so many as an adult? Isn't it funny how mothers want to expose their kids to another kid with chicken pox so they will get over it?
Consider it a training tool.
