Default Linking gut bacteria with cholesterol metabolism

This study tries to find out how to make better drugs, but do we wonder why they can't use the study to promote better gut bacteria. Yes, we do.


Researchers at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden, show that cholesterol metabolism is regulated by bacteria in the small intestine. These findings may be important for the development of new drugs for cardiovascular disease.

It is well established that cholesterol is the major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Cholesterol � which is mainly synthesized in the body but also obtained from dietary sources � is converted to bile acids in the liver, which are then secreted into the intestine and either removed from the body or recycled back to the liver.

The influence of gut bacteria on human health and disease is a rapidly expanding research area. Fredrick B�ckhed's research group is a leader in this field and is investigating how gut bacteria are linked to lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

In a study published in the prestigious journal Cell Metabolism, they show that gut bacteria reduce bile acid synthesis in the liver by signaling through a specific protein, known as the FXR receptor, in the small intestine.

'Drugs that reduce cholesterol levels have, in recent years, greatly reduced deaths from cardiovascular disease. Our study is a step forward because we have shown how gut bacteria regulate the formation of bile acids from cholesterol', says Sama Sayin, medical doctor and PhD student at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, and the study's first author.

The FXR receptor not only affects cholesterol metabolism but is also involved in the body's sugar and fat metabolism.

'If future research can identify the specific bacteria that affect FXR signaling in the gut, this could lead to new ways to treat diabetes and cardiovascular disease', says Fredrik B�ckhed, professor at the Sahlgrenska Academy, , University of Gothenburg, who led the study.


The article 'Gut microbiota regulates bile acid metabolism by reducing the levels of tauro-betamuricholic acid, a naturally occurring FXR antagonist' is published in Cell Metabolism on February 5. The study is a collaboration with researchers from VTT in Finland, the Karolinska Institute and AstraZeneca in M�lndal.

Cholesterol has nothing to do with cardiovascular disease.

The major risk factor for cardiovascular disease is the use of vegetable oils, such as canola oil, corn oil, and margarine, along with high fructose corn syrup. Also included in the list of artery destroying oils is olive oil, and it doesn't matter if it is extra virgin or not because it turns into trans fat in the body, causing major inflammation and artery damage.

The cholesterol is merely "damage control" in the arteries.

Some oils are beneficial. These would include coconut oil, flax seed oil, borage oil, evening primrose oil, fish oil, etc..

This is a huge lie.

Actual studies show the opposite, people with low cholesterol have more heart attacks than people with high cholesterol.

There is no doubt that gut health determines overall health, however not in the method stated in that useless study.

I believe that cholesterol can be damaging when it is oxidized. Therefor I believe in the necessity of supplementing or eating antioxidants. Though, I do not believe in some of the premise of that study, I do think there is merit in building a good environment for good bacteria and trying to maintain good colonies. If they help to metabolize cholesterol, well.. all the better.

I think it's important to always get to the route of the problem, which this research is evidently doing.

Since cholesterol is mainly synthesized in the body, it's important to learn how to regulate the 'switch' for those who are over-producing. And at the same time, perhaps with this research, scientists will find a way encourage more production in those who are not producing enough, thus suffering heart attack deaths as a result.
Much like on the same lines as research has done with insulin production.

Consider the following scenario:

Artery damage is caused by inflammation and nutrient deficiency. The inflammation can be caused by a poor diet, consisting of vegetable oils, margarine, etc., and nutrient deficiency will cause several health issues, including high blood pressure, which will cause cracks and leaks in artery walls.

As the artery walls become damaged, they begin to leak blood. If this isn't stopped, the outcome is going to be a heart attack, just as sure as gravity.

The body senses this, and does two things. First, it causes inflammation in the artery wall to stop the blood loss, and second, it sends cholesterol to the damaged area to be used as a temporary "patch".

At this point, lowering your cholesterol with drugs and/or cholesterol-free diet will only kill you sooner. Cholesterol is not the enemy, however in order for it to save your life, it must coat the damaged areas of the artery wall, which in turn causes the artery to be narrower.

This is meant to be a temporary repair until the artery walls are given the nutrients it needs to rebuild and repair itself. What happens in 90% of this type of scenario? The patient goes to the doctor who then suggests a stent or bypass surgery, both of which are not required and do nothing to fix the original problem.

Artery walls can be repaired naturally by taking in all necessary nutrients while avoiding the vegetable oils, and not by blaming cholesterol, so that big pharma can make billions selling statin drugs, which generally do more harm than good... And now they want children put on these drugs as a preventative...another horrible idea ...

In spite of what you read and hear, your body is designed to protect you, not kill you. It wouldn't send cholesterol into your arteries unless it was necessary. It should be seen as a warning, telling you that something is wrong, just like the red light on the dash board..

Coronary heart disease, the most common form of heart disease, affects the blood vessels (or coronary arteries) of the heart. It occurs when the coronary arteries which supply the heart with blood and oxygen, become blocked with plaque causing a disruption in the oxygen supply to the heart muscle cells. This in turn leads to problems such as angina (mild to moderate chest pain) and myocardial infarction or heart attacks (usually with severe chest pain).

Cholesterol and Heart Disease

Let me discuss a subject that seems to cause a lot of confusion, cholesterol. If you believe all the hype, then cholesterol is one of the most dangerous substances on the planet and is the direct cause of most heart disease as it blocks your arteries. Correct?

Well not exactly. The evidence doesn’t support this rather simplistic theory that the large drug companies have used for decades to promote their fancy cholesterol lowering drugs. I’m sure you have heard the following statements countless times – “don’t eat too many fatty foods as they contain too much cholesterol’ or “cholesterol is bad for you” or even, “cholesterol causes heart disease”.

Firstly high blood cholesterol is not related to a diet high in fats or cholesterol containing foods. So you can relax about eating fats or meats etc. They will not cause a rise in your blood cholesterol levels.

Cholesterol is such an important hormone that your liver will produce large amounts of it every day regardless of how much you have in your diet. Cholesterol is used by your body to make the body’s master hormone pregnenolone, which in turn is used to make all the sex hormones like testosterone, progesterone, estrogen, and also DHEA. Cholesterol is also used in all your cells membrane for stability and to enable the transfer of oxygen and nutrients in and to allow waste products to be removed. As you can see, as far as your body is concerned cholesterol is one of its most important substances. So why has it been so vilified?

High blood cholesterol levels have been associated with high rates of heart disease; but an association does not mean that cholesterol causes heart disease – therein is the problem with the medical research.

When there is a crime the police always show up, correct? So does that mean that you can conclude that the police are the cause of the crime? Of course not! That would be ridiculous wouldn’t it? Well that is exactly the ridiculous conclusions that have been made from the research about cholesterol.

Cholesterol the Good Guy

Much research has shown that in fact cholesterol, being such a critical hormone in your body, acts in a protective manner to help repair your damaged arteries. Due to poor nutrition, inadequate vitamin intake, and high blood pressure, your arteries become weak and damaged, leading to rupture of some of their membrane wall components into the bloodstream. This immediately causes an inflammatory reaction as your body attempts to repair this damage. Macrophages (or scavenger white blood cells) invade this area and attempt to mop up the damaged tissues. This is the trigger to arterial plaque build-up. Your body then uses cholesterol and other lipids (lipoprotein A) to help repair this damaged artery.

The higher the level of cholesterol in your blood, the larger the amount that will be deposited in this “repair” site. Cholesterol is always found in arterial plaques because it is there to help repair the damaged arterial membrane after it has been damaged. It is not the cause of the damage to the artery. Without cholesterol the damaged artery would not heal and will continue to leak further.

This arterial plaque is essentially your body’s attempt to repair your damaged arterial wall.

Clean Out Your Arteries – DeZone Therapy

So then what is the best way to not only clean out your blocked arteries, but also to get them healthy and strong so that they never become blocked again?

The pop science version of cholesterol goes something like this: when you eat fatty foods, especially foods rich in animal fat, the saturated fat and cholesterol in these foods wind up in your blood and stick to your arteries. Since saturated fats are solid outside your body, they will be solid inside your body too — depsite the 30-degree increase in average temperature. Arteries are much like pipes. When they get caked up with grease, blood flow is impaired, and a heart attack ensues.
None of the prominent scientists who promoted the idea that cholesterol is a critical factor in the development of heart disease ever believed anything remotely resembling this nonsense. From the beginning, they recognized that atherosclerotic plaque accumulates behind the layer of the artery in contact with the blood, called the endothelium, and that the cholesterol and fat within it is engulfed in white blood cells.
