I picked up a new tube of toothpaste this evening and thought I should have a look at the expiration date. I don't know when I last looked for this information on toothpaste -- if ever, to tell the truth.

This is what is says: 22JUL072 ... as in 2072 ????

Wow. I was hoping if I live that long, there will be a new way to keep out teeth clean. I'm a little disappointed in the technology. What happened to the concept of progress????

But for now, I'm going to brush my teeth with the new ageless toothpaste .... clearly, my eyes are tired because I am tired. It's been a long day and so I'm going to say:

Changed my font to "Chalkboard" at 12 pt *and* this is *much better*!!! The font is a bit on the fun or funky side of fonts ... but that's okay. In fact, I think font selection contributes to crankiness online!! When you can't see what you're trying to read, that's enough to make a person cranky!! Anyway, I'm glad I don't need to put that tube of toothpaste into my Will. (This being almost 2006 makes 2072 a long way off!)

Remember to brush your teeth regularly so you can use up your tube of toothpaste during its two-year shelf-life. (In some cases, your paste may be good for longer than two years.)

It **sure** would be nice to know the shelf life of expensive drugs. We know that most pharmaceuticals are good well beyond the date. But I don't think it is common knowledge on the street. Consider how unusable that "date" on the toothpaste really is. I also think the liability issue goes hand in hand with promoting the purchase of more of the same .... (the wining and dining of physicians by pharmaceutical companies is not as bad as it once was ... but it's pretty disgusting still, IMO). If they have "leftover pain medication", they must first dispose it the "out-dated" because it "can't be any good if it expired recently.

Going to the refrigerator to check the date on the milk. That is a date I pay attention to!!!! Just the thought of sour milk is ... Yuk! ;-)

I believe that published shelf lives have more to do with reducing the manufacturer's product liability tail than anything to do with the actual product. Drugs are virtually all manufactured with a shelf life of less than two years, apparently regardless of the actual science. It would be nice to know what the shelf life of expensive drugs *really* is.

I did a little checking into the shelf life of toothpaste products.

The product I purchased is Colgate Total. From the FAQ on the website, here is what it says about shelf life of toothpaste:

So.... I'm thinking that the date which appears as: 22 JUL072 probably means that it expires on 22 JUL 2007 and has a two (2) year shelf life.

This isn't so important if we purchase and use the product right away. But if we put this item, along with medications and other expiration-dated items, into emergency/disaster kits, it is something to be aware of as the kits are reviewed regularly.
