Genistein.....from the free version of Grouppe Kurosawa
Quote:
Genistein Availability in Foods and Supplements
This essay is reposted from our subscription blog in the public interest.
There is a huge difference between the prevention and cure of cancer. Although 30-50 mgs of dietary genistein may prevent numerous cancers, this dose is NOT sufficient to treat cancers.
In the next essay, I am going to report on three fantastic papers which show how genistein tremendously enhances the cytotoxic efficacy of various chemo drugs. The common element is the ability of genistein to reduce NF-kappaB activity.
In this study on human volunteers, dietary genistein in supplement form prevents the activation of NF-kappaB by TNF-alpha. TNF, tumor necrosis factor, is the MOST potent anti-cancer agent known. Unfortunately, this inflammatory immune hormone also induces NF-kappaB synthesis at the same time that it is activating pro-death pathways in cells. This neutralizes the ability of TNF to kill cancer cells. Further, it allows TNF to actually promote the growth of cancer cells...not exactly the response we are looking for.
The authors fed human volunteers 50 mgs of a soy isoflavone supplement twice daily for three weeks. They removed lymphocytes from these individuals and challenged the cells with TNF. These cells turned out to be tremendously sensitive to TNF since the NF-kappaB response, normally induced by TNF, was blocked by dietary genistein. This is a critically important study because it was conducted in the body.

We now know that a 100 mg dose of dietary genistein is the minimum dose necessary for inhibiting NF-kiappaB activity in the body. I wish to emphasize the word MINIMUM.
Let's review our dietary and supplement genistein options.
40 grams of soy nuts contain over 39 mgs of genistein. 40 grams of these nuts is only 1/3 of a cup. I have a Mason jar full of these nuts next to my recliner chair. They are addictive. It is easy to ingest 100 mgs of genistein eating soy nuts alone.

Tofu is made from soy milk. It contains less genistein than other soy foods. 1/2 pound of tofu contains about 50 mgs of genistein. Silky tofu is creamy and is used to give testure to smoothie drinks. Use a 1/4 pound of silky tofu in your morning "shake". Add a few scoops of soy powder, milk and a banana and you have a nutritious breakfast. Add vanilla extract or chocolate sauce as desired. These smoothies are delicious. Drink them multiple times a day. Make certain the bananas are somewhat old or they will not breakdown in the blender.
There are only two soy supplements that I recommend and they are both made by LEF, Life Extension Foundation. Unfortunately, many soy supplements are frauds because they contains fewer isoflavones than they claim. We don't have this problem with LEF supplements. They are manufactured under FDA GMP guidelines and contain exactly the amount of isolfavones claimed on the label.
LEF makes a product called Super-Absorbable Soy Isoflavones, product 758. 60 capsules for $28 for non-members, $21 for members. Good price and good product. This product contains 26 mgs of genistein per capsule.
LEF also makes a super isoflavone product called Ultra Soy Extract, product 785. 600 capsules for $349, $261.75 for members. Each of these capsules contains 131 mgs of genistein. Two capsules a day will provide 262 mgs of genistein for almost a year. This equates to 87 cents a day for members. A great value.
Please purchase your LEF products from the LEF logo on our home page. We get a small commission.
