Default Question for Ted (food in UK)

Although we do we have the British food jokes here; when they show places in the UK on the food network, except for the deep fried mars bars, most of the food in the UK looks much fresher than ours and you have a much wider variety. Your opinion?

Nope your are absolutely wrong. We don't have the kind of variety that you guys do and owing to not so favourable weather, most of our produce is imported. Manufacturers are very economical with the truth here on packet labeling also.

I can't really say because I've not been abroad much so can't compare with other places and I buy most of our food locally and we live in an area near where most veg is grown.
I don't like supermarket food, tend to buy from the farm where possible or local butchers/vegetable shops.
We don't eat out much either so although I'm aware of junk food I've not eaten any.
I grow a lot of my own veg so in season I can just about feed us both with veg. We also keep chickens so never have to buy eggs.

I suppose I should say that bought ready meals are pretty dreadful. Almost always disappointing and the ingredients list always seems to have HFCS or permutations of it's pseudonyms as well as high omega 6 levels (corn soy oil etc) which I try to avoid. I'm not confident that those who buy lots of meals prepared in factories would be getting a healthy diet.
I think you have to get back to the real basic ingredients and cook it yourself at home. I don't think you can trust anyone else.
There is a reason most bought foods contain sweeteners and thats to mask the fact the ingredients are crap.

Cool

Not to mention the fact that they evidently contain Too Much Salt! Big
Gov push now going on to radically reduce the amounts of salt put in
canned products, restaurant served dishes, processed foods, etc.
Big on national news over this past weekend.
They need to do the same thing about fructose corn syrup in products.

No chance look at the subsidies on corn.
That is big money in anyones language.
and if they put in that much money to make it so cheap there is going to be a lot of opposition to cutting the subsidy.

There is a book called Omnivore's Dilemma which discusses how corn is so highly subsidized and industrialized due to it being cheap. You can bet there will be a ton of opposition.
