This is half true. It's not an "allergic" reaction , but Asians are special when it comes to alcohol. When Asians drink alcohol, they have a reaction that dilates their capillaries and causes their face to redden. Usually exclusively in their face, but sometimes the reddening can happen all over their body. This is called the Asian flush. It has nothing to do with allergies because this is passed down genetically in all Asian people.

Is it all Asian people for certain? The reason I ask is that a few Asian friends appear to be able to drink everything and anything and high quantities and there appears to be no effects, but a few other Asian friends of mine tell me they clearly can't drink it. My first experience was with a friend from Korea who turned bright red and you could clearly see something didn't agree with him.

As I understand it, it is an enzyme deficiency, and it is most prevalent in Asians although not exclusive to them. Sorry for saying incorrectly before that its passed down in ALL Asians Its not possible for EVERY single Asian to have this. It is similar to the lactose intolerance of Native Americans. I'm sure there are many who can drink milk, but for the most part they are lactose intolerant, same as, for the most part, Asians get Asian flush. Hence the use of Asian in the name
