Question Onions As Germ Collectors

My cousin recently posted this repost at FB and I wondered if anyone else has heard anything similar regarding the use of onions in this fashion~

In 1919 when the flu killed 40 million people there was this Doctor that visited the many farmers to see if he could help them combat the flu...
Many of the farmers and their family had contracted it and many died..

The doctor came upon this one farmer and to his surprise, everyone was very healthy. When the doctor asked what the farmer was doing that was different the wife replied that she had placed an unpeeled onion in a dish in the rooms of the home, (probably only two rooms back then).. The doctor couldn't believe it and asked if he could have one of the onions and place it under the microscope. She gave him one and when he did this, he did find the flu virus in the onion. It obviously absorbed the bacteria, therefore, keeping the family healthy.

Now, I heard this story from my hairdresser. She said that several years ago, many of her employees were coming down with the flu, and so were many of her customers. The next year she placed several bowls with onions around in her shop. To her surprise, none of her staff got sick. It must work. Try it and see what happens. We did it last year and we never got the flu.

Now there is a P. S. to this for I sent it to a friend in Oregon who regularly contributes material to me on health issues. She replied with this most interesting experience about onions:
"Thanks for the reminder. I don't know about the farmer's story...but, I do know that I contacted pneumonia, and, needless to say, I was very ill... I came across an article that said to cut both ends off an onion put it into an empty jar, and place the jar next to the sick patient at night.. It said the onion wo uld be black in the morning from the germs...sure enough it happened just like that...the onion was a mess and I began to feel better."

Interesting I have heard that people that peel a lot of onions have a lower incidence of colds and flus

As a kid, I was sickly and got infections in chest. Mom would peel and onion and place in makeshift bag and pin to front of my Pj's. I hated it, but did get better after breathing those darn onions all night.

I read that same story a while back. Pretty amazing if true. It sure beats toxic antibacterial sprays.

Makes you wonder what they're absorbing at the grocery store

I would think you'd have to cut an end off or something for it to absorb junk.

Yeah, I think the covering keeps the compounds inside the onion until peeled. No one gets runny eyes by holding an unpeeled onion.

BTW, did you know that the highest source of quercetin which anti-inflammatory is in the skin? Sometimes when I make soup or stew I'll removed the outermost skin but used the remaining peel right in the pot. After cooked just remove the peel.

Hmmm We have a 95 yr old cooking expert at the church (Greek). Still smokes and drives. One of his cooking secrets I learned is when cooking meat, you cover the meat with the onion skins/peels.

I always use everything except the outermost thin, paperish stuff. But, no, I didn't know about quercetin. Good to know!

I've had a hellish relationship with onions makin' me cry Well, until K2C suggested goggles hahaha and THAT works! Although, i had to find a hiding spot for them in the kitchen as they raise some eyebrows when people see them..
I tried all other suggestions, big glass of water near the cutting area, etc. nothin' worked.. still cried.. that turned on the nose.. what a production!!!

Yes, this one originates from Europe. A long-standing folk remedy.

Incidentally, it is also used for psychic protection. Cut two onions in half, place one in each corner of the room. The onions absorb any negative energies.

In both cases, take the onions outside and burn them, as soon as...(If used for the latter purpose, don't touch them with your hands)

An onion a day keeps the doctor away.

I wrote this thread off as an "old wives tale". Now I was reminded of the remedy by my cousin who is an RN with a helicopter EMS unit.

I had a lingering cold for a couple of weeks right before Thanksgiving. I haven't had a cold for years, and this one was not responding as I ever remember. I had been taking colloidal silver, pau d'arco, chaparral, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, etc. Nothing was working, and it was getting close to Thanksgiving. So I saw an advertisement for Alka-Seltzer Cold and Flu. That was the start of hell week for me. I had severe anaphylaxis reaction. Then I read the label to find out that it contains aspirin. A lot of it. Everything started shutting down. Swollen lips, tongue, throat, and bronchial tubes. I could not even take a deep enough breath to call 911 and get any word out. I could not stand long enough to make strong coffee to stimulate the adrenals. If EMS did come, they would have given me epinephrine. All I could do for 6 hours was to seriously concentrate on breathing. Force a breath in, then let it out. Gee. I need to get an Epi-pen. I wonder how long their shelf life is.

Anyway, my cousin told me to cut an onion and let it sit in the same room as me whenever I have a cold or flu.

This also indicates that one should absolutely never eat a left over onion.

OMG, that must have been an intense six hours. I hope you weren't alone. Hugs - now get some onions placed throughout your house. Are you better?

Why don't you make a new post on this topic so you can get more input on ways to ensure your lungs heal up properly. Now is the time to get a fresh perspective of the situation. You're very smart and help so many people now let others help you.
