Default Mosquito repellant?

Hi All,

Well it looks like the mosquitoes have returned this year. It seems like they are here many weeks earlier than usual. Hope this doesnt mean they are going to be worse this year. Someone told me that Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) may be a good mosquito repellant. She did not know how to use this oil as a repellant. Since a couple of ounces cost $12-$13, I would not want to waste it. Im thinking that a few drops should be mixed with soap and water then applied, but Im not sure how much. Does anyone have suggestions on ways to prepare and use this oil? Or, is it even effective as a repellant?

Don't know about the melaluka oil but you might try a dose of staphysagria 200c and see if that works. Repeat it only if it seems to have worn off. I've heard that it works but haven't tried it myself. Mosquitoes don't care for me much.

I resurrected this from some other so-called heath web site.

The Garlic Research Labs, a California-based company, has new environmentally friendly mosquito spray. A local village here is going to try it in one their parks this summer.

It is a garlic-based product that apparently overwhelms the mosquitos ability to smell its victims, so when the poor little critters cannot find anyone to bite they just starve to death.

Also it is suppose to help keep rabbits, birds and of course vampires out of your garden.

Mosquito control experts are skeptical of the companys claims. Saying, they havent been proven in controlled studies or presented in a scientific, peer-reviewed journal. Therefore we should keep using the old tried and true chemicals. Gee! Where have I heard that kind of advice before?

Default Mosquitos and Garlic!

Eating 2 to 3 cloves of garlic per day will do the same - keep the little buggers away. Adding garlic to food dishes is so easy to do, plus it helps build up your immune system, helps thin your blood. Some other benefits too, tho I don't remember all of them presently.

Some of these mosquito repellants smell so bad that I prefer mosquitoes.
But, of course, if I'm in a place where the mosquitoes are known to carry malaria or some encephalitis virus, something must be done. Sleeping underneath a mosquito net seems like a good idea.

Lab Rat,

I bought some essential oil mosquito repellent last summer that contains tea tree oil, Atlas Cedarwood, Patchouli, citronella, and eucalyptus. It's called Skeeter Beater. These are the directions that came with it:

Bath, 6 to 8 drops in the tub
Body Oil, 5-10 drops in 1 oz. carrier oil
Body lotion/cream, 5-10 drops in 1 oz. lotion
Compress, 3-5 drops in 4 oz. water
Face Oil, 25 drops in 1 oz. carrier oil
Inhalant, 6-10 drops on paper towel or 3-5 drops in hot water
Massage Oil, 15-30 drops in 1 oz. carrier oil
Perfume, 15-30% essential oil to 70-85% alcohol
Spray bottle with 8 oz. of water add 40-80 drops.

I put about 40 drops in an 8 oz. spray bottle with water and it works!! Before I found the Skeeter Beater, I used just tea tree oil in water in a spray bottle and it works, too! We get tons of mosquitoes where I live in Louisiana, and mosquito repellant is a must. Also, there were more cases of West Nile where I live, than anywhere in the US! These dilution rates are for any type of essential oil. Hope this helps!
