Default Memory supplements

Hi all,

I am new here and would like to know what the best memory supplements are. My wife is going to be 67 in a couple of months and has just started having a problem with her memory. She is in good health and is in the process of finishing up school getting her bachelors degree in healthcare administration working towards getting her masters degree. I am not sure if it is the pressure she is under to get her degrees or what it is but we would like to know if there are any vitamin supplements she could take to try to help out.

Thanks

There are all sorts of brain supplements out there, I think Phosphatidyl Serine is probably the best.

There are several supplements that will improve memory, such as blueberry extract, coconut oil, omega 3 fatty acids, etc. and all should be taken on a daily basis, along with a product that contains all 60 necessary minerals. (check Dr. Joel Wallach on youtube)

Also, one of the most important advancements for memory loss in my opinion is a product called "Prevagen". It is made from a jelly fish protein, called apoaequorin, which binds to the "other" calcium in the brain, improving memory function.

Prevagen is constantly talked about on the tv show know the cause, at www.knowthecause.com and can be seen here:

Dr McCleary has a useful blog and website discussing what can be done to protect the brain and delay the effects of ageing.
I think reducing blood glucose levels so your insulin requirement is less helps protect the brain and using Coconut oil allows the brain to have ketones available as a back up fuel is probably the best protection from Alzheimer's.

homocysteine is a marker for oxidative stress and inflammation.
We know that correcting B vit status can lower homocysteine.
B vitamins and homocysteine

Vitamin D3, omega 3, magnesium, melatonin are all anti inflammatory agents that are typically in short supply particularly as we age. Therefore ensuring adequate status of these will improve matters.

The best supplements for memory include ingredients that boost or retain the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Primarily, this means some form of Choline. Choline is related to the B vitamins, and there are many forms of it. The expensive forms like citicoline are more effective with a smaller dose, but you can take a larger dose of the cheaper forms such as choline bitartrate and save money for other brain supplements.

Besides Choline, the other supplement specifically for memory is Huperzine, an extract of Chinese club moss. Huperzine inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine. The primary active constituent is a fraction called Huperzine-A.

Vinpocetine is an herbal extract used to increase oxygen to the brain and inhibit hypoxia. It is not specific for memory, but it is the best memory supplement after Choline and Huperzine.

There are memory supplements that include all three of the above-mentioned ingredients.

LOL When I was in grad school, we had a biochemist from U Pitt come give a seminar on huperzine A Good stuff, but being a natural product, they cannot patent it.

Default Choline, Huperzine, Vinpocetine, Bacopa

Bacopa is another good choice. It is an Ayurvedic herb used for memory and other brain functions.

Combine effective doses of Choline, Huperzine, Vinpocetine, Bacopa, and you have a first-class memory supplement.

Other brain supplement ingredients are probably intended to support alertness, brain energy, brain-cell repair, etc.

Can't be patented. Will always be obscure. But the few people who know what it is will get to benefit from it.

Huperzine A is also an Acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, and works in the same way as the Drug Aricept.
The purpose of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors is to extend the availability of choline so it doesn't get degraded by Acetylcholinesterase so quickly.
Common sense indicates that rather than slowing down the degradation of choline it may be a smart move to ensure your body is NEVER SHORT of choline.

Here is an article on Meeting the Choline Requirement -- Eggs, Organs, and the Wheat Paradox]

So when was the last time you ate liver?
Within the last 7 days hopefully.
