Music therapy
Music therapy can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of people suffering from depression, according to a new study.
Researchers in Finland examined people aged 18 - 50 years who had been diagnosed with depression. Half of the group examined were offered music therapy sessions in which they were encouraged to play percussion instruments such as African djembe drums.
Three months later the group reported significantly fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety.
According to Professor Christian Gold, who ran the trial, music therapy enables people to express themselves in a non-verbal way in situations when they couldn't find the words to describe their experience
