Thumbs up Vitamin B-12, Brain Function/Shrinking, Dementia

Already taking a daily B-50 complex, but decided to go out today and pick up some sublingual vitamin B-12 to take every couple of days or so in addition to that. I went with Solaray brand 2,000mcg. Adding the B-12 after reading this article...

However, for some time now there has been specific interest in the role the B12 plays in brain function. In particular, B12 deficiency is believed to play a potential role in the declining brain function (cognitive impairment) often seen in ageing.

One of the proposed mechanisms here concerns homocysteine an amino acid that is linked with adverse effects on health including cardiovascular issues such as heart disease and stroke. Low levels of B12 can cause raised levels of homocysteine (as can low levels of other nutrients including folic acid and vitamin B6). Measuring homocysteine levels is sometimes used as a proxy for B12 status.

In a study published this week in the journal Neurology, vitamin B12 levels and brain structure and function was assessed in a group of individuals aged 65 or more. B12 status was assessed with five tests including homocysteine levels and serum (blood) B12 levels. Four and a half years later, the individuals were assessed via tests for cognitive function as well as MRIs of the brain.

Vitamin B12 - Methylcobalamin is the active form of Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 - Cyanocobalamin requires an enzyme in the gut to change it to the active form therefore if you haven't the "intrinsic factor" you MAY be wasting your money.
It's helpful to absorb some in the oral cavity as sometime the digestive system doesn't absorb it.
That study Briffa was talking about the guys taking an ordinary multi that contained ordinary cheapo B12 (Cyanocobalamin) actually didn't do any better with extra B12. so if you've already got B12 in a multi it MAY NOT improve matters taking an extra amount.
Do make sure you are getting plenty of CHOLINE in your diet.
Choline-rich diet tied to sharper memory and I'm sure I don't have to remind anyone low vitamin d status also is linked to the mild cognitive impairment which often precedes dementia.

B12 should be absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Sub-lingual, nasal gel or injections by doctors are the most effective forms of B12. B12 tablets which are meant to be swallowed, dispersing through the digestive tract, are likely to cause diarrhea and will likely not be assimilated by the body--as Ted said, a waste of money.

I've been doing B12 injections for a while now. I really like them and can feel the difference. I hope to help prevent deterioration of the nervous system as I age and of course it is only part of the plan.. I take 10mg per injection about once a month.

We should be aware though that This [oral] dose is as effective and possibly superior to a parenteral [shots] regimen in all causes of cobalamin deficiency because 1 to 2% of an oral dose is always absorbed by diffusion.

Well, be that as it may, I have noticed significant clinical changes with injection especially when it eliminated my long standing chronic hip pain from a fall. Oral did nothing, but then I didn't take 10mg oral either.. Yuck.. to much to deal with.

I think that high injection dosages do more than just mitigatge a cobalamine deficiency. It perhaps force starts other process... cant say for sure, hence it works more on a medicine level rather than a supplement level.

I still think a steady state is better than swings from high to low.
