Default Lemon Balm Extract vs. Anxiety

I just noticed that Swanson Vitamins now carries a standardized lemon balm extract. It's an extract that has some scientific validation to back it up and it's reasonably priced.

I thought I'd mention it in case anyone might benefit from this ...

People with hypothyroid conditions should be cautious with lemon balm extract. It is sometimes used to correct an overactive thyroid condition called Graves Disease as it can lower Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH).

Thanks for posting that precaution, liverock.

I found this when searching under "lemon balm (and) thyroid" ...

Precautions

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, contain components that can trigger side effects and interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, herbs should be taken with care, under the supervision of a health care provider qualified in the field of botanical medicine.
No side effects or symptoms of toxicity have been reported with lemon balm use, but this herb should not be used by pregnant or breast-feeding women.

Possible Interactions

  • Sedatives, Thyroid medications -- Although not yet demonstrated in clinical studies, lemon balm may interfere with sedatives and thyroid medications. If you are taking sedatives (for sleep disorders or anxiety) or medications to regulate your thyroid, you should consult a health care provider before taking lemon balm.

if you can take lemon balm, it is very easy to grow... like a weed. It will take over your garden, if you let it. which is why some people say to grow it in a pot.

Hmmm interesting. Lemon Balm does have a bunch of uses I've heard. And the fact that its so easy to grow is always nice! I wasn't aware of the Thyroid issue either though, thanks for the warning.
