Leaky gut syndrome is the name given to a very common health disorder in which the intestinal lining is more permeable than normal. The abnormally large spaces present between the cells of the gut wall allow the entry of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and other toxic material into the bloodstream. Leaky gut syndrome is at least as common as all the immune system diseases combined. Basically, it is caused by infection and the attendant inflammation of the gut lining. The infection and inflammation can be brought about by any of the following:
Antibiotic use�leads to the overgrowth of abnormal bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract
NSAIDs (pain medications)
Gastrointestinal infections
Alcohol
Foods contaminated by parasites
Foods contaminated by bacteria, such as E. coli and salmonella
Chemicals (including dyes and preservatives) in fermented and processed foods
Prescription corticosteroids
Wheat proteins, acidic beverages
Pesticides, food preservatives, environmental toxins, etc.
An abundance of highly refined sugars and other carbohydrates in your diet (e.g., candy, cookies, soft drinks, white bread, pasta)
LGS damages the protective coating of antibodies of the immunoglobin A (IgA) family normally present in a healthy gut.13 Because IgA helps us ward off infections, leaky gut problems make us less resistant to viruses, bacteria, parasites, and Candida.14,15 These microbes are then able to invade the bloodstream and colonize almost any body tissue or organ, thereby causing disease. LGS also creates a long list of mineral deficiencies because the various carrier proteins needed to transport minerals from the intestine to the blood are damaged by the inflammation process.16 For example, magnesium deficiency is a very common finding in conditions like fibromyalgia, despite high magnesium intake through diet and supplementation. If the carrier protein for magnesium is damaged, it doesn�t matter how much of the mineral you take; it will not get into the body where it is needed. Similarly, the body can be deprived of zinc because of poor intestinal absorption, often resulting in hair loss. Copper deficiency can occur in an identical way, leading to high blood cholesterol levels and osteoarthritis. In addition, when calcium, boron, silicon, and manganese are not absorbed into the bloodstream, bone problems develop. Bloating, cramps, and gas are common ailments associated with a leaky gut. Eventually, however, nutritional deficiencies can also lead to systemic complaints like fatigue, headaches, memory loss, poor concentration, or irritability.17
High intestinal permeability is a normal feature of newborn gut ecology. Colostrum functions to reduce inflammation, protect against irritation from toxins, and check any potential infection, while promoting epithelial growth and repair. This combination of effects quickly reduces permeability, preventing toxins, irritants, allergens, and infectious agents from entering body tissues. A number of serious health syndromes are now known to be associated with abnormally increased gut permeability. These include all auto-immune diseases including Crohn�s disease, diabetes, autism, lupus, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer�s, Parkinson�s, arthritis, cholera, Salmonella and E. coli infection, HIV, arthritis, chronic fatigue syndrome, hepatitis, cystic fibrosis, alcoholism, muscular dystrophy, fibromyalgia, and scleroderma, asthma, and allergies. Research shows that colostrum can correct this leaky gut syndrome with its unique combination of immune factors and growth stimulators, which includes epithelial growth factors. In fact, research has shown that colostrum is the single most effective agent for correcting leaky gut syndrome. Of course, other factors can help, too. These include friendly bacterial flora, folic acid, vitamin B12, and aloe. In addition, optimal nutrition should be ensured with a potent, broad-spectrum multi-vitamin and mineral supplementation program, high fiber and natural enzyme intake with many raw fruits and vegetables, and steamed vegetables and greens in the diet. Never heard that before. God knew what he was doing when he created colostrum. If mothers knew this they would breast feed immediately. My hospital encouraged it.
Once you've been diagnosed it's lifestyle changes for the long haul to correct a long standing problem. I think mine has been this way since childhood.
So colostrum is the big daddy in helping to heal the permeability of the gut as well as aloe vera, b12, folic acid and probiotics.
LGS is one of the ROOT causes of many health problems. Getting to the root is so important. If only it caused everything then we could just focus on that and trust everything else would fall into balance. Wouldn't that be nice?
mommysunshine, there is a lot on that web page that I did not know about Colostrum. For many years, I poo-poo'd it for a marketing scam. I thought the adult intestines did not process it.
My new naturopathic doc is helping me with leaky gut, which I too have had for decades. I'm pretty sure. It affects my sinuses drastically. That and fungus, which probably caused the leaky gut in the first place.
He has me taking a GI Protect product that contains IGF transfer factor and glutathione. I know that glutathione was instrumental in strengthening the intestinal lining. The transfer factor is a major component of colostrum, but due to my sensitivity to milk, he says I should not take colostrum. This was from a previous test that I no longer trust and am going to talk to him about that now that I've studied more about colostrum.

This isn't quite right.
Fungi aren't allowed into the bloodstream because of abnormal large spaces between the cells of the gut wall, they "puncture" holes in the intestinal wall with their pointed tails. These are different varieties of yeast, mostly candida, and once they get into the bloodstream they can go anywhere in the body.

Antibiotics kill bacteria, or prevent them from reproducing, including killing off the good gut bacteria, and this causes a yeast overgrowth.
Although drugs and alcohol can cause ulcers in the stomach and intestines, which can lead to severe health issues, it is the candida yeast that is the real problem. Yeast feeds off of sugar, simple carbs, and alcohol, which is fermented sugar.

Yeast are living organisms. They take in sugar and simple carbs, and excreet mycotoxins, which are very toxic and can cause cramps, gas, and other intestinal issues.
Good gut bacteria produce B12, which normally keep candida at a nominal amount. However, when this good bacteria is wiped out, no more B12.

These are all caused by systemic fungal infections, with the exception of HIV, which is a fraud. Nobody dies from HIV, however, drugs used to "treat" HIV such as AZT cause fungal infections, liver disease, and death.

I agree, but would add probiotics, glutamine, and some natural antifungals to the mix.

Leaky gut is not the cause, it is a symptom, the cause is further back. Candida yeast causes leaky gut, however, the root of the problem is to determine what caused the candida.
It is my opinion that, besides man-made disease such as vaccines, x-rays, chemicals, antibiotics, and pesticides, etc, every "other" disease is caused by being deficient in vitamins or minerals.
The bottom line is to make sure you get all necessary vitamins and trace minerals, sunshine, clean water and air, exercise, a good diet, and a positive attitude.

Interesting reading....so if say, I have a new grandson who is ten years old that has muscular dystrophy, can we turn it around???? he is wheel chair bound and his legs are starting to get the contractures... (he cant straighten his legs, and his feet point down constantly)

jfh, I was wondering how you are comming along with repairing your "leaky gut" condition? I just recieved test results yesterday, showing my SIgA is 174, when the normal range is 400-880. I'm working with a Natural Medicine do on this, but also thought any experiences your could share might be helpful to me as well.
Starting last spring I have already revampted my diet, so I'm not eating the typical american diet, but rather one that has lots of veggies, good fats, alkaline, etc. I'm also one who exercises regularly and does my best to keep stress down through various relaxation techniques. Thanks.
Sounds like you're doing all the right things Twindad86, except maybe for the alkaline thing. I've written a lot about alkaline already. The intestines need to be slightly acid. That's why you need to supplement with probiotics.
My total salivary SIgA is 9, where 25-60 mg/dl is normal. So my ND wants me to keep taking colesterol. I'm taking a thymic formula for a while too. Apparently my immune system is impaired and has been for many years. He also has me on a gluten free diet for at least a month to see if any change occurs. "Gluten free" is the new fad diet that says that medical and alternative doctors have not clue - do not know how to diagnose.
