Can high doses or long-term use of Melatonin supplements for sleep cause it to build up in the brain causing tumors? I remember reading something about this a long time ago.

I hope not as I take it almost every night. I'm anywhere between 3mg up to 10mg a night and can't sleep without it.
I try to wonder what's better sleeping 5 hours a night without melatonin or melatonin? I keep reading more and more benefits of melatonin, so hoping it's not hurting me in the long term. I think it has to be better than ambien
I'm not sure where I heard that about the melatonin causing brain tumors, can't find anything on it now. I know it's better than taking Ambien for sure. My husband just takes a piece of a 1mg sublingual tablet from Source Naturals and he's good with that small amount. I usually take 1/2 tablet of Schiff Melatonin with Theanine - 3mg. But on some nights, like last night, I took the whole 3mg. That's when he brought up the old scare about the tumors.

Jbo, do you find that your dreams are more intense, more vivid? I've always had very detailed dreams with brillant colors, and also have lucid dreams very frequently. I find that when I'm taking Melatonin, the dreams become more elaborate, which is great unless they're nightmares.

When I first started to take melatonin I did have crazy dreams all the time. I've been taking it so long that I don't recall my dreams like I used to.
The problem I'm having now is that I'm trying to cut down on my melatonin and I'm having a lot of trouble sleeping. I was taking the tripple strength everyday and tried to go down to 6mg of time release and I'm noticing I'm having trouble sleeping. A few days ago I even took an over the counter equate sleeping pill, because my melatonin wasn't working like it used to.
I think maybe my system got used to 10mg and now I'm struggling to sleep with 6mg of time release. I'm thinking about just doing over the counter sleeping pills for two weeks to shock my system out of melatonin pills and then go back to 6mg of time release.
I sometimes break a Unisom type product (Kirkland brand) in half, and take that in addition to the melatonin. The melatonin I'm using presently has L-Theanine in it, maybe you could try taking this supplement along with the melatonin.

Taking only 3mg or less wouldn't help me much

I have taken Melatonin for years....don't think it causes tumors. I'd have had one by now if it did.
I take three 3mg melatonin nightly. I started w/one, then went to 2 & now take three.
I do think our systems become immune to a product working well after a while. I've tried OTC stuff
from the drugstore to no avail. So, I recently ordered from Dr Whitaker, a product called Restful Night Essentials.
Took my first 2 capsules last night. I went to sleep fairly quickly, slept well, went back to sleep easily,
after my usual 4am potty break, & feel great this morning.

I have found coffea 30c homeopathic to work well for me.

I wonder if supplementing with melatonin routinely will eventually reduce your natural capacity to produce it? this concern is why I have stayed away from it and sought other means generally, but I don't have chronic sleep issues though.
They say the older you get the less you make and its why often elderly people are night owls.

I drink a lot of green tea, between 2-4 cups every single morning, so I'm wondering if the one with L-theanine would help me. I tried 5-htp before and I have mixed results and even feelings about it.

synthetic, which I thought they didn't evne sell animal source melatonin anymore in the USA? I order from swanson vitamins, so you can see the tripple strength I used to take and then dual-release is the one I'm now taking.
I've been taking melatonin (10mg) since I was 19 years old and never heard of anything remotely related to tumors.
It did however cause a weight gain- and as an odd side effect, my breasts got larger (from B cup to C cup). However to countereffect the weight gain, I also take bromelain supplements for increasing circulation.
With melatonin, I noticed that I have incredible energy, and it has completely eradicated my depressive moods. In fact when I stop taking melatonin, I start to feel depressed again (my family has a history of depression).
The only thing I've noticed is that taking vitamin E supplements interferes with melatonin and doesn't make it as effective. Does anyone know why this could be?
