so Ive been taking too much iron for awhile now....
I didnt really realize it at first but Im a male age 23 and Ive been intaking too much iron via supplements - I dont eat much red meat, but sometimes a little, or some chicken/eggs.
but like, Im taking protein supplements that also have vitamins in them, and I thought it was just whey and casein but it also has 55% of iron twice a day - 110% overall, which is far under the lethal amount still, but Ive also been taking GNC Ultra Mega Green Nutrition as well, which has 100% 18mg of iron. so together thats near too much of an amount, and im working out a lot, but Im not losing blood, so I dont see myself losing that iron and im slightly afraid of consequences at this point?
Ive been taking that amount for like, almost 2 weeks or so, and im def going to cut the vitamin supplement out because I dont really need it, and just take B-complex with C and some other minerals/vitamins and fish oil, and cut out the stuff with iron, but have I already taken too much? should I like, try to purge my body of iron and stop intaking it for awhile due to excess?
so... will I like die or get sick if I just decrese my iron intake and dont worry about it? I feel fine currently, im just worried its sitting in my system waiting to come out.
The problem with too much stored iron is that, short of bleeding, the body cant easily get rid of it. Menstruating women are unlikely to have a problem, but for others with high stores the recommended treatments include phlebotomy and frequent blood donation. Without these measures, excess iron gets deposited in the liver, heart and pancreas, where it can cause cirrhosis, liver cancer, cardiac arrhythmias and diabetes.
Other studies have shown that when people with high levels of stored iron donate blood regularly, their insulin sensitivity and risk of diabetes diminishes.
While the risk of cancer from too much iron is uncertain except in people with hemochromatosis, the known links between high levels of red meat consumption and cancers of the colon and prostate are highly suggestive of an increased risk associated with excessive consumption of heme iron.
As for heart disease, the link found in some studies to high levels of heme iron consumption may reflect the effect of saturated fats from red meat, the richest source of heme iron, more than that of iron itself.
High levels of iron have been found in the brains of people with neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimers, Parkinsons and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrigs disease). But sick brain cells accumulate abnormal levels of minerals like aluminum, so iron in these cases may be an effect of brain disease rather than its cause.
so... will I like die or get sick if I just decrese my iron intake and dont worry about it? I feel fine currently, im just worried its sitting in my system waiting to come out.
If you feel fine and aren't worried at this point, I wouldn't worry. Two weeks of a form of iron that is hard to adsorb anyway wouldn't cause me any worry.
We lose iron when we sweat.

Make sure it doesn't have soy in it. Soy is often used because it's cheap. Find a pure whey supplement that is simply whey, without all the artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners.
