Citric Acid May Improve Physical Fatigue

Summary: In a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 3-way crossover study involving 18 healthy adults, supplementation with 2,700 mg/d citric acid for a period of 8 days was found to significantly attenuate physical fatigue, as compared to a placebo, and as compared to L-carnitine supplementation (1,000 mg/d).
Physical fatigue was induced through workload trials on a cycle ergometer. Levels of chromagranin A - a physiological stress marker - were lower among subjects after supplementation with citric acid, as compared to placebo. Furthermore, subjective feelings of fatigue were also lower among subjects taking the citric acid. No such beneficial effects were found with L-carnitine supplementation.
The authors conclude, "To avoid long-term fatigue, it is important to develop effective strategies that attenuate fatigue; citric acid use may prevent the unfavorable consequences of accumulated physical fatigue."
