Default Combination of Micronutrients for Bone (COMB)

Combination of Micronutrients for Bone (COMB)
The full text of this paper is free online and I do urge everyone with bone problems to READ all of it.
However as they point out the cost of these

worked out at $2.26 (CDN) per day, amounting to $67.80 per month or $824.90 per year. A small percentage of the group discontinued the micronutrient intervention because they felt it was too expensive to purchase the nutrients, which were not covered by their drug plans.

(1) Docosahexanoic acid or DHA (from Purified Fish Oil): 250 mg/day
Jarrow Formulas, Max DHA, Highly Concentrated Omega-3's, 180 $19.17 (12.46)
each capsule provides DHA 250mg EPA 36mg $0.11 daily

(2) Vitamin D3: 2000 IU/day
Country Life, Gluten Free, Vitamin D3, 2500 IU, 200 $8.30 (5.39) $0.0415
Personally I'd use 5000iu/d $9.18 (5.97) $0.045/d

(3) Vitamin K2 (non-synthetic MK7 form): 100 ug/day
Now Foods, MK-7, Vitamin K-2, 100 mcg, 60 Vcaps $12.73 (8.27) $0.21/d
Personally I'd choose Life Extension, Super K, with Advanced K2 Complex, 90 Softgels $19.50 (12.68) $0.22/d much better value as it's got all k forms.

(4) Strontium citrate: 680 mg/day
Doctor's Best, Strontium Bone Maker, 340 mg, 120 Veggie Caps $21.20 $0.35/d

(5) Elemental magnesium: 25 mg/day
Personally I'd use Doctor's Best, High Absorption Magnesium, 240 Tablets $17.17 $0.07/d this would provide 4x the amount used in the trial and be well absorbed. I don't think 25mg/d is sufficient.

(6) Dietary sources of calcium recommended
(7) Daily impact exercising encouraged
DHA $0.11
VIT D3 $0.045
VIT K $0.22
Strontium $0.35
Magnesium $0.07
total $0.79/daily so a lot less than the $2.26 from their suppliers and better value. I've not added in shipping costs so that would make a difference but neither have I accounted for discounts. Some of the items could be bulk ordered for extra discount.
Helpful People who regularly share their IHERB code may also get further discounts.
All the above items come from IHERB because they ship cheapest to the UK. I've not spent a lot of time in price comparision but have looked for the nearest equivalent to those used in this trial. If you've more time and patience than I've got you may be able to find better bargains/value for money. Certainly if you live in the USA/CANADA the use google/amazon to see what's on offer elsewhere.

I would have included boron. It has remarkable bone and tooth enamel regenerative abilities. At least in rabbit and rat studies. Just a little Twenty Mule Team Borax will do. Less than 1/8 teaspoon per day.

Sure but it wasn't my list, just the micro-nutrients they used in that study. (I've already pointed out the vit d would be low for UK, Magnesium is far too low. But it's interesting to read the study and see what they found out.
But even adding in a Boron like
Source Naturals, Triple Boron, 3 mg, 200 Capsules $7.00 (4.55) it's not going to break the bank.

Vitamin D deficiency in white, apparently healthy, free-living adults in a temperate region

Have a look at the image and see if you can work out which 25(OH)D level is associated with the lowest PTH score?

Osteoporosis is the least of the problems with the low Vitamin D and high PTH levels usually caused by the highly acidic diets of today.

High PTH levels can cause damage to heart cells and eventually end up causing congestive heart failure.
