\nOur star, the Sun, would be on an outer arm of the spiral. I think the second from the most outer one. Scary, huh?

\nDo you wonder how scientist can determine the distance of these galaxies to us? Of course, it now take a lot of computing power to really be sure, but an example is in a Hubble space telescope capture. If an initial exposure can not see light in an area of space, the lens can remain open until the first sign of light is seen. Knowing the constancy of the speed of light and the amount of time it took for Hubble to detect the light, it can be found how many light years it took the light to travel to us. Radio and x-ray telescopes are even better at it. So the light could be from long dead stars or galaxies billions of years ago.

\nWhenever I see a picture of Earth taken from outer space, I cringe. It is difficult to see that we are so alone in the blackness of space. Just hanging there. Traveling at the same speed and distance from the sun for thousands/millions of years.\r\n

\r\n \r\n I kind of liked finding out that we weren\'t in the center of our galaxy, it\'s humbling.

\nBut stars are being created in the center so we couldn\'t live there. And the center is possibly a black hole. If you believe in God it\'s comforting to know that the earth in the perfect place to support life. A slight change and life couldn\'t exist here.
\n
\nAnd the universe is filled with millions of galaxies, humbling, but there\'s a lot out there, not just empty space. And dark matter, what they used to think was just empty space is, is a substance in itself, it\'s just that it neither emits or scatters light.
\n
\nI just read a few days ago that they found oxygen in the Orion constellation. I wonder what\'s up with that.\r\n

\nMy sister lives on a small mountain in the fingerlakes region of NY State. There\'s no light pollution, which is perfect for stargazing. It\'s quite remarkable feeling so small & insignificant when surrounded by so many bright stars on a mountaintop. Puts things into perspective very quickly.. we live on a planet circling in space. \r\n

I love that! I wish I lived in a place like that-' + '-you just stare and stare up into the sky for the longest time and it\'s so beautiful and awesome, including seeing the band of the milky way. Once I was on the beach and watched shooting star after shooting star, that was a beautiful scene.\r\n

\r\n \r\n Once I was on a beach by myself over looking the vast ocean. I truly felt insignificant. I could understand how the sailors of 1492 feared for sailing off the end of the world. Or even earlier sailors in really light craft while trying to find land in the Pacific. In one small galaxy of millions of galaxies, we really are insignificant.\r\n
