Default Prebiotics May Decrease Inflammation in Elderly

Quote:
In a prospective, randomized, double-blind, controlled study involving 74 elderly subjects (mean age: 84 years) at risk of malnutrition or already undernourished, results indicate that oral nutritional supplementation with prebiotics may improve certain inflammatory parameters.

The subjects received daily liquid supplements with oligosaccharides (1.3 g/250 ml) or without oligosaccharides, for a period of 12 weeks.

At intervention end, significant decreases in TNF-alpha mRNA and IL-6 mRNA levels were observed in the prebiotics-supplemented group. Additionally, a decrease in serum levels of sCD14 - a product shed by activated macrophages - was observed in the prebiotics-supplemented group.

Thus, the results of this study suggest that in elderly subjects at risk of malnutrition receiving oral nutritional supplementation, the addition of prebiotics may exert a beneficial effect on systemic pro-inflammatory markers.
