Its not just the fabricating or 'massaging' of research studies but the non reporting of failed studies that is a big problem in evaluating the effectiveness and safety of a drug.
Drug companies are under no obligation to report on these studies and they can carry out any number of failed studies and keep on testing until they get one where there is some effect that will pass FDA approval. Would you want a drug that had failed 10 tests and passed on only 1? Drug companies that have spent millions in developing a drug are under tremendous pressure to obtain FDA approval and getting favorable peer reviews is one of the most important links in the chain to obtain that approval. https://www.ahrp.org/infomail/04/06/05.php |
