Ginkgo May Inhibit Atherosclerosis

The authors conclude that EGb 761 supplementation inhibited the process of atherosclerosis in blood from people with severe cardiovascular disease. EGb 761 appeared to stimulate the body's antioxidant enzymes and reduce the risk factors for oxidized LDL and lipoprotein(a) formation.
The authors emphasize that this was a small exploratory study and that results warrant further investigation in larger numbers of subjects.
The inhibition of atherosclerosis observed in this study is consistent with previous studies showing antioxidant and vasodilating properties of EGb 761. While EGb 761 reduced nanoplaque formation in a laboratory model, additional studies are needed to demonstrate the effects of ginkgo on plaque formation in human arteries.

In a double-blinded, randomized, placebo-controlled study involving 80 patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), treatment with ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) was found to improve coronary blood flow.
Subjects were randomly assigned to either receive an injectable solution of GBE (Ginaton, an aqueous solution containing 17.5 mg GBE for injection per 5 mL ampoule; extract standardized to 24% ginkgo flavone glycosides, corresponding to 4.2 mg ginkgo flavone glycosides per 5 mL ampoule), at a dose of 0.7 mg/minute, or a placebo, for a period of 120 minutes.
After treatment with GBE, significant increases in left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) blood flow in maximal diastolic peak velocity (MDPV), maximal systolic peak velocity (MSPV) and diastolic time velocity integral (DTVI) were found, as compared to after placebo. Furthermore, flow-mediated dilation increased by 69.75% (from 3.95 to 6.55).
The percentage changes in MDPV, MSPV, or DTVI of LAD blood flow were found to be linearly correlated with the percentage change in brachial artery FMD following treatment with GBE.
The authors conclude, "…GBE treatment in patients with CAD had a beneficial effect on coronary flow, at least partially through endothelium-dependent vasodilation."
