Mulberry Extract and Atherosclerosis
Quote:
In a study involving in vivo and in vitro components, dietary intake of mulberry leaf was found to reduce atherogenesis.
In the first part of the study, mice at 6 weeks of age who were deficient in apolipoprotein E were either fed normal chow or chow containing 1% mulberry leaf powder for a period of 12 weeks, after which they were sacrificed.
Comparing the two groups, a significant increase in the lag time of lipoprotein oxidation and a significant 40% reduction in atherosclerotic lesion size in the aorta were found in the mice fed mulberry leaf powder, as compared to the controls.
In vivo, an aqueous extract of mulberry leaf was found to inhibit lipoprotein oxidation and exert a strong scavenging effect on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl.
The authors conclude, "These results confirm that mulberry leaf contains anti-oxidative substances that might help prevent atherosclerosis."
Additional research is warranted.
