Default Statin fact: Few Consumers Aware

Following is a little know fact about Statin Drugs.

Statin Fact: The decline rate in deaths from heart disease both pre and post statins remained unchanged.

That is correct. In the United States, deaths from heart disease peaked in 1968. Since then there has been a gradual decline in deaths from heart disease.

Statins were introduced in 1989. The decline in death RATES remained unchanged after the introduction of statins. There was no enhancement in the decline.

Nothing changed except one thing. The first 13 years statins were on the market, the INCIDENCE of death from heart disease made a notable climb.

and heart disease is still the number one killer of women....
A decline in the death rate from heart disease is likely caused by the increased rate of death by cancer. Cancer is taking them before the heart gives out.

What major changes took place around 1970, when death from heart disease began its sudden decline?..

Is this a test?

Jane Fonda exercise videos?
Kellogg's Special K intro?

In the 1970s a continuous increase of fat consumption and of cigarette consumption has been balanced by an increase of prevalence of controlled hypertensives, by an increase of leisure physical activity, by an increasing availability of coronary care units and consumption of beta-blockers. It is likely that in the late 1970s a plateau was reached in the coronary epidemic.

No, this is not a test. Just fun facts. You got me laughing about the Jane Fonda exercise videos. Creative answer.

1968 was the year smoking rates peaked. Along with it heart attacks reached an all time high. Then Americans started ditching their cigarettes. As the smoking rate declined in the 70's, so did deaths from heart disease. But there was also something else changing in the USA at the same time. Major changes.

Last week, the US Surgeon General announced that there is 7000 toxins (chemicals) in a cigarette.

My mother smoked from her teenage years until 3 months before she died at 75. She was on morphine for 3 months before she died with a large liver tumor. Smoking can affect all parts of the body.

Thanks for you observation.

You have to understand that death rates from one disease will decrease as death rates from other diseases increase.

As death rates from heart attacks have decreased cancer deaths have skyrocketed. More women dying from cancer than ever before and at younger ages. Fifty years ago 1 in 7 women did not get breast cancer in their life time... they do now. Most of them will be dead in under 5 years. Everywhere I look now I see breast cancer. These woman are not getting the chance to have advanced heart disease and although heart disese still continues to be the leading cause of death for women its got to be changing as cancer deaths go up.

That's the problem that I have with such statistics. I had at least 3 dear friends that died of breast cancer, but the newspaper said things like brain cancer or other. So, I really wonder if there was much more breast cancer in the past that have not been counted.
